Sweden does not want to give back Polish cultural treasures

  1. At issue is the fact that the government of the Kingdom of Sweden has once again refused to hand over to Poland even some of the cultural and national heritage treasures looted from us in the 17th century. In this case, it’s about the negative response of the Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, to an interpellation by MP Biern Soeder from the Sweden Democrats party (in the Europarliament they are with PiS in the same political group – the European Conservatives and Reformists), who suggested considering giving the “Statute of Laski” to the Republic. This is about the oldest monument of Polish writing! There used to be ten copies – now there are two left. One is in Poland, and the other, looted during the “Deluge” – in Sweden.

Stockholm also did not give back the first edition of the work that revolutionized people’s thinking about the solar system – this is, of course, Nicolaus Copernicus’ “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres.” The work, stolen by Swedish soldiers more than three and a half centuries ago, is held by Uppsala University.

  2. Speaking as a Swede and as a social democrat i think it is absurd to keep objects that were taken and brought from abroad, even if it was a long time ago. Im sure most of us agree, it is just that it isnt very well covered at the moment, and i have not heard about in in Swedish media. I have no idea what motives underlies this decision, but it really shouldnt matter.

  3. Well the minute you allow that, someone will knock on doors in London or Paris – bye bye go the cultural treasures. Such spark can start a chain reaction that will be hard to control and museums all over the world are just consistent.

Nah, just kidding. C’mon man, can we has our culture back?

  4. We have whole rooms filled with banners and shit, Czechia is not getting their books back. So Poland is not the only one. Im not really pro handing such things over myself but since it is trendy to hand back things to African nations and tribes around the world, why not hand it back also to European nations?
