zurich is very expensive for everyone, native people and immigrants alike
Another unbelievably dumb chart. Expats receive packages that reflect the local income levels. I don’t know about Hong Kong but Zurich and Geneva are two of the cheapest cities in the world in terms of purchasing power. If you calculate the average expenses in average minutes worked, hardly anyone is better off. It would make sense to claim these cities are expensive for tourists but not expats
Thanks for posting this, super helpful. /s
Luckily im not an expat living in zurich.. must be fucking hard to live here… growing up in zurich makes it way easier.
what a disaster of a chart 😂😂😂😂 what‘s next, some „schwubler“ covidcharts about deathrates
If you are a professional single guy or double-earning professional couple in Zurich without children then you live very easily and very well.
I really hate the term « expat » like it’s literally the word for rich (mostly white) immigrants.
No matter the numbers or scale (which for some reason weren’t presented) we’re capable of making enough money to live our best life in our own country. Being Swiss means being resourceful.
* Zurich 14
* Geneva 28
* NYC 44
* Singapore 90
* Tokyo 109
* Tel Aviv 133
* Hong Kong 135
* Beijing 147
Others are probably too small to be included.
for locals as well thx to foreigners
1st to 2nd most developed country for civil right economy and environment , spending money in a pension fund here instead of buying your second hand Camaro in Broccolino is very well worth.
What’s the point of the red bar, if it is clearly not representative of anything?
Hop Schweiz !!! Almost a full podium !!!
And most expats earn more than locals… It’s especially a problem in Geneva with all the international organizations who pay the rent for their employees without even looking at the amount, which in turn increases rent prices all over the place.
Most expats earn a truck load of cash in those Swiss cities. Yes they have high expenses, driving a Mercedes S Class and living in fancy apartments in Zurich isn’t cheap, but most expats are still able to save more money a month than the average brutto salaries in most European countries
“Expats”.
I lived in Zürich for less than 1500 CHF per month and it’s easily doable.
Hong Kong first ? What ?
Expats? You mean immigrants?
If you earn in the 30-60k CHF a year range and have to support children and/or a partner(even if your single the lower end of that range will be quite hard to manage) then it becomes obvious that switzerland is very expensive but if you are a fresh engineering graduate earning 60-70k with no kids and or partner than you will live quite well.
lol living in switzerland it’s easy, try to live in Tessin 😂
Yeah no $hit bro!
It is expensive. But i dont know a country with better and cleaner roads. Better heltcare. Better public transport. Better quality of foods or water Or better maintained buildings. If u look arround only in europe. Every other country is at least a bit more fucked up. And we also earn much more than many others. So it puts it in perspective.
I don’t come from a rich country so I’m an immigrant not an expat, lucky me!
How is any swiss city above new york? Have you seen the prices in manhatten lmao
And the salaries are higher than anywhere else by even a larger proportion.
But the salaries are $$$$$
Guys! Oslo so damn close to Zürich
Firstly, the chart would need numbers for scale. Secondly, purchasing power is what matters most, as you’re also gonna make more money if you work in Switzerland.
Is this telling me I first should check the prices before I buy something now?
Cries in Hong Kong.
You get what you pay for.
We left CH for NL and managed to buy a 5-bedroom house right off. Prices are about 25% cheaper. Would not have been possible in Geneva.

What a terrible chart without numbers or scale.
Here is the link where I got the graph.

There’s another post in this sub right now: “[Who has to work the longest to buy an IPhone?](https://www.reddit.com/r/Switzerland/comments/wpoj0u/who_has_to_work_the_longest_to_buy_an_iphone/)”
Just shows how flawed such charts are.
And here’s cities ranked by purchasing power: [https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/rankings.jsp?title=2021&displayColumn=1](https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/rankings.jsp?title=2021&displayColumn=1)
As expected Swiss + American cities dominate.
