Newbury council plans for ‘hedgehog highways’ rejected

  1. “But West Berkshire Council, which is the planning authority, refused the request, saying it was “an *over burdening condition*” for planning.”

Its literally a hole in a fucking fence.

  2. This is a poor show from that planning department, I used to be a local authority planner and we would impose conditions for biodiversity measures all the time; bat and bird boxes, hedgehog holes, all that stuff.

It was a standard condition to require evidence of these measures on pretty much any new developments on green or garden land.

And you can enforce the condition too, it may not be top of planning enforcement list to go checking for hedgehog holes, but it’s possible.

  3. Not content with cutting down over 10,000 mature trees for the bi-pass, it looks like West Berkshire Council’s “total war on nature” has entered a particularly vicious phase.

  4. Absolutely baffling – as a former planning officer this is a very standard request from an ecological standpoint and is routinely included as part of ecology and ecological management conditions, alongside standard bird and bat boxes, reptile habitats etc.

I will say however that having been in that position, I can understand why it happens. Being shouted at by developers day in day out, they then go to the managers / head of planning / chief exec who then overrule you and let them get away with it. One of the reasons why I quit the profession.

  5. A species considered a favourite by the British public and yet still not worthy of a simple protection measure. I am 30 and have not seen a hedgehog unless it was roadkill, they are now considered vulnerable to extinction because we have cut up their habitat for human development. We will only have seagulls and pigeons by 2030 if we keep ignoring basic conservation measures.

  6. If anyone is interested. Hedghogs need a fairly large area. A section of 750mm Corrugated drainpipe, a third dug down under a hole in the fence is enough to let these roam through gardens and estates if you can get your neighbours involved.

Absolute tossards though from this council. All talk about green and eco whereas they really don’t give a shit. Who exactly considered it to be overburdining to make a little nature highway. And who told him it was overburdening? What a load of tosh. The overlords have got their Evil on at the moment. Hopefully it will shift soon.

  7. Make the developer build this hole in the fence. If the developer feels its overburdening , they are free to fuck off and build their luxury apartments somewhere else
