I suspect the barrier for a lot of these girls is the same one that my sons faced in their primary school – the school didn’t have a field for playing sports, so the children didn’t get to play football in their PE lessons or at lunchtime. The school used to have the space, but like a large number of inner city schools, they had to build on the field to expand the number of pupils that could attend the school. Years of underinvestment is not going to be reversed easily.
It’s great they won and all but why does every “legacy” have to involve the expansion of the state? Why can’t their legacy be inspiring so many people to play football that there is simply no need for the state to get involved. Reduce the deficit with those resources instead. Cheers Lionesses!
Perhaps if we had less dogs, we would have more green space to play football?
Yeah bet you didn’t see that one coming did you ey? Reality is though, each new dog needs a certain amount of local green space to be walked, that has led to the shut down of local football pitches in parks. Just like cars, dogs will replace available space for children and families to play.
Good luck with that one, our recent Prime Ministers are not exactly known for their urgency. Chances are we’ll get a photoshoot, handshakes and promises before something to the sum of precisely bugger all is done.
I remember at my school girls weren’t allowed to play football and that wasn’t that long ago. I believe it’s still the case in many schools, this needs to change. Girls should have the same opportunities to play sports and I hope the women’s euros momentum keeps going and brings about the change we need to see for women’s football as a whole
Do they want attendance and a TV audience legislated?
Seems fine and all but crikey, I can’t think of anything less important in the world right now. It’s delivered in such a massively important way that it blows my mind.
hasnt there always been the opportunity for girls to play football ? We had 2 in our school team in the 80’s, to me this, along with the call for the premier league and not the FA to be in charge of women’s football is all a money grab, because you don’t need to talk to someone who’s a big supporter of the women’s game for the conversation to stray into talk about funding and player’s wages.
we’ve already seen some brilliant female winners from all the home nations in the commonwealth games, don’t see us shouting about giving every girl the chance to do any of those niche sport, is that because their isnt much money involved ?
