Spotted on Twitter, is it not mad that our President gets twice as much as the President of France? What a cushy job!

  1. I’d query some of those figures. The President is [supposedly on €250k](https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-40729734.html) or so at the moment. With current exchange rates that’s only about 255k dollars. France supposedly [pays Macron €142k](https://en.as.com/latest_news/how-much-does-macron-earn-as-president-of-the-france-and-what-is-his-salary-n/), although I can’t find the original forbes article that cites.

At the same time, figuring out just what a president gets can be difficult, given perks and expenses that go with the job. Also obviously the job of Head of State can vary a bit.

  2. You see the reason is if we didn’t pay them so well they’d flee to other countries and give them their expertise

  3. There’s an argument that if you want the best people to be in charge of the country, you have to pay them accordingly.

If you look at british politics, the PM gets £164,000, but spends most of their term in office securing their future finances, rather than actually running th country properly.

On the converse, you have America, where you have to be wealthy in the first place to run for office.

If we want the best people to run the country rather than going into the private sector, then they should be paid a commensurate wage – enough to recognise the seniority of the position(s), and enough to make public service financially attractive so that they can focus on the job, rather than worrying about what they think they *should* be earning.
