To be replaced by Dr Johnson, he led the UK through a pandemic
Did this country a phenomenal service. At a time where its senior government ministers were partying it up whilst thousands died, Whitty, Vallance and Van Tam led the front and helped us come to terms with the pandemic by leading with facts and science and competence. History will remember them incredibly well.
He’s earned it.
When he took up the job and when Chris Witty took up the Chief Medical Officer role they can’t have imagined how important their tenure would be. How much more they would be the focus of the entire country than any of their predecessors would be.
Imagine being in those roles and suddenly the first major pandemic in 100 years happens.
Vallance, van tam and Whitty felt like the adults in the room when they spoke. As soon as they were dropped the curtain fell and everyone saw this government for what it is
I don’t blame him. He’s been at the head during a challenging time.
While I am not evangelical about Vallace and Whitty like others in this thread- I am greatful for their service, wish them well and hope they get some time off
