Man dies after getting into difficulty in Clare lake – The Clare Champion

  1. Very sad. I think these tragedies are inevitable now with many taking to the “sea life = best life” craze. Everyone is a cliff jumper, a stand up paddle boarder or a long distance sea swimmer now. And in lakes it’s even more difficult as there are few points to get out once you jump in.

I love the sea swims myself (I don’t mess with lakes) but I don’t go more than 5-10m away from the ladder getting in. Even then, I have had times where the cold has shocked me and I have to swim back. The sea is no joke folks!

  2. The shock of jumping in to cold water can cause muscles to seize and fresh water has less buoyancy. Not sure of the situation here but I never swim in lakes or rivers for this reason after being in a situation where my legs cramped up after jumping off a pier in a lake.

  3. People don’t understand how dangerous lakes and rivers can be, never mind the sea. Lakes and rivers can be a lot deeper than people expect. At least with *most* beaches across Ireland you can remain in your depth for a few steps, but lakes and rivers can plunge you way passed yours.

If you include cold water shock in this, then it can be a real recipe for tragedy
