Stranraer is mental because there is no direct transport link. You’d have to go up to Glasgow, then back down to Stranraer.
How can Newcastle take longer to get to than Edinburgh?
I wanted to compare these to modern times. So I put the journeys into google maps and set the departure time as 8am on a work day. Some of these are worse now, some are better.
So when traveling from London to locations in England and Wales journeys are typically half an hour faster than they were in 1980. However travel to Scotland has gotten harder over the last 40 years.
I wonder if that would make Scottish people feel a weaker connection to people down south…
Excellent graphic, thanks! Not sure how it takes as long to get to Burnley as it does to get to Barrow!
Everything else aside, that’s a really good visualisation… Took me a minute to find Manchester though, thought it’d be faster than Leeds and Sheffield, and a lot faster than Glasgow..
London to Norwich still taking 2 hours 42 years on tells you everything you need to know about the state of the trains in this country
Is it showing london to Edinburgh by train or plane?
Did Wales annex Shrewsbury?
Airplane…
Not complaining but how come my hometown Hitchin’s getting representation on the map?
This is a very interesting visualisation but also r/TIHI
And to cross the black star takes 1.5 hours.
I’d like to see one with them using the Concorde time to get to New York
BRO WHERES NEWFOUNDLAND
2 and a half hours from Liverpool isn’t too different now tbf
Good luck getting to Nova Scotia in 7 hours.
Shrewsbury is not in Wales!
I love how Birkenhead of all places gets a mention on this map haha.
How the fuck are they getting to inverness in five hours?
6hrs from Newquay.
Isochrones.
How is Manchester 2.5 hours and Burnley is 5?

Ah I remember well the decade we forgot about the island of Ireland..
only 2 and a half hours from london to chester? these days you can’t even go direct and once you get to the station with the direct connection it’s still another 4 hour train ride
How do I tell which type of transport was used for each location? Am I stupid?

This is based off of a map that Richard Natkiel drew for the New Society (London). It included air travel to show how many places in Britain feel further away from London than European or American cities that can be reached by airplane. [Included here](https://alternativetransport.wordpress.com/2022/08/16/travel-time-polar-diagrams-and-azimuthal-equidistant-projections/) a similar map for Paris, Dortmund and Vienna.
