So just saw an episode of Father Ted and I already love it, Never laughed so hard since El Chavo Del Ocho (A Mexican comedy sitcom fringe the 70s), any other Irish media that you would recommend to this Mexican?

  1. It wasn’t until I went to visit Father Ted’s house that I realized everything that isn’t outside of the parochial house, with a few exceptions, was shot on a sound stage in London.

  2. Any of the comedies by Sharon Horgan are a good laugh

    Young offenders is very good

    For films

    Waking Ned

    Intermission

    En bruge

    The guard

    The snapper

    The van

    The commitments

  3. Brazilian here, have been living in Ireland for 7 years and my partner is Irish. A lot of the comedy consumed here isn’t really Irish, the top ones are Father Ted (fantastic) and Hardy Bucks (if you’ve only lived in Dublin, you’ll probably get just as lost as I do lol)

A lot of the British suggestions here on the thread are great, I particularly love IT Crowd

By the way I grew up watching El Chavo (or Chaves in Portuguese) and it was a bonding experience between me and my dad. A lot of the things we consume in Brazil is Mexican due to being so cheap to buy the rights to broadcast!

  4. Grande El chavo Del Ocho

It was a big hit in Brazil til recent years and anyone older than 18 knows several quotes from that show.

I endorse the recommended Derry Girls. Despite that the funniest character has so little screen time. Sister Michael is the best.

  5. Not Irish, but Still Game. Scottish comedy there’s available on Netflix, absolutely hilarious with similar humour to father Ted

[I’m Alan Partridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_Alan_Partridge) is good. It’s British, but Coogan is a very Irish British person, and the other two creators are an Italian-Scotsman and a Welshman. I think Father Ted is the funniest shit that was ever made “over the pond”, Alan Partridge isn’t anywhere as great, but the two seasons of “I’m Alan Partridge” is some of the wackiest, zaniest, beyond absurd TV I’ve seen since, well, Father Ted.

Derry Girls is the other best Irish Show I’ve watch since Father Ted, and from the same production company and on Channel 4. Bridget & Eamon is also pretty good, almost funnier than Derry girls, and as a North American, I find a lot more Irish.

You might want to seek out [The Savage Eye](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1360827/), or [Republic of Telly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Telly), the former is well worth watching if ur interested in Ireland, Republic of Telly is maybe a bit dated now, but still a funny show to watch.

To say this as kindly as I can to the Irish, the more and more I’ve consumed media from Ireland and England, the more and more I’ve found that Ireland and England are the two most common English speaking countries in Europe… It was a Bridget & Eamon episode that made me learn about television licenses for the first time… but then I found out this absolute insanity also happens in the UK too. I’m a Canadian who thinks the British monarchy is an affront to all that is good and decent, but I still can’t help but find the Irish to be more similar to the English than the Scottish and Welsh, and the same vice versa… the English seem more similar to the Irish than the Scottish and Welsh… the accents just sound much more similar and easier to understand, and it seems like the English/Irish use a lot more of the same words and are craftier with their words/ you can even understand them at all.

Again this is coming from someone who’s only lived in places where Pat Mustard wouldn’t be working any Dairy Girls, since “milk floats” don’t exist on this side of the pond. I guess y’all seem similar to me, because I find the English/Irish accents less distracting than say Scottish, Welsh, or especially Australian/New Zealand/South African… yeah, u got frostbit boys from the North and Cork People and all kinds of regional accents, but when it comes down to it, I think the Irish and the English accents are by far the most pleasing to the ear in the entire English speaking world. I wish we spoke like you lot over here still… the closest I can get is watching TV shows from Ireland and England, until I actually go there one day.

Father Ted has to be one of the funniest, greatest TV shows ever made… just watching the title sequence stirs a feeling in me that basically no other show elicits. Every episode feels like some kooky time machine that takes you back to see what Ireland was like in the 1990s. I wish there were more shows like Father Ted from Ireland… Is there no desire to have a show that takes a piss at the Church again, or are people just “too cool” for that now?

Derry girls might be over, but I’d totally watch a show that was all about Sister Michael going to live on Craggy Island with Father Dougal, who’s now living all alone with Mrs. Doyle and waiting Len to drop off his new boss, Sister Michael. I think Graham and Arthur could take that concept and turn it bitingly funny show… respectful of the legacy Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly left behind. It wouldn’t be Father Ted Season 4, you can’t have a show when Ted is dead, but you could have Sister Michael Season 1, and make it a crossover, sorta like how they did After M*A*SH or The Jeffersons.

All I know is Craggy Island shouldn’t have to be completely untouched just because Dermot Morgan died… Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews are still alive… I hope they revisit that magical island once again and give the world that unique gift of television comedy. It might not ever be anything close to the original, but even if it was 50% as funny, it would be funnier than almost anything on television right now. Something definitely worth having a pray for.

  7. Give black books a watch if you get a chance. Dylan Morgan was involved in writing a few episodes of Fr Ted I think. Great show.

  8. Youd likely also like Black Books. There’s also Darkplace, for something even sillier and horror themed (but honestly just silly)

  9. It’s not a TV show but Foil Arms and Hog on YouTube they’re 3 Irish comedians thay do sketch comedy some of their stuff is feckin hilarious
