  1. Peoples finances are getting battered from all sides, if the energy price cap rises to what they expect, or the government don’t provide enough help in the interim, some people are going to have a really tough winter.

At least petrol and diesel prices are falling, at least that’s something I guess.

  2. My gf and I are a no kid, two median or just below median incomes, and we are struggling… how people can afford children Ill never understand.

  3. Bear in mind that 11.6% is the average price. The price for everyday items that I buy weekly has in many cases shot up by as much as 50 or 60%. It seems to be the stuff that nobody buys that is keeping the average down.

  4. There is definitely profiteering being done by the supermarkets here as so many things are going up constantly by so much more than 11%

  5. If the public don’t riot this winter when they are both hungry & cold then I genuinely don’t think it will ever happen.

It’s becoming difficult to manage on decent wages, those earning less must be close to saying enough is enough surely?

  6. Part of that is inflation, the other part is just their greed and rising the prices for free profit. They’d still be in the green if it was up 5%.

  7. 650g of chicken breast in Aldi has gone from ~£3.70 to ~£4.20 in the past year or so.

The quality of food (particularly vegetables) has dropped off a cliff too.

  8. Not only that, but the food quality on many items is far worse. Mostly fresh fruit and vegetables but also fish portions are like 2/3 the size of what they used to be for the same price or possibly even a bit more.

  9. I think they need to include more items in the inflation index.
Dam Tories has reduced the number of items assessed over the years to cover the real inflation figure.
A lot of items I used to buy are now rising 10% every week or two.

  10. How can people go into the winter like this? The food banks are going to be so stretched – please donate if you can and if you’re going to struggle, try and stock up if you can.

Side hustles like matched betting and survey sites can bring in an extra £10+ a week, do it and use it to stock up now if you’re struggling financially.

  11. 12years of Tory rule + Brexit. Hope the voters are happy and not, say, starving in the cold and eating shit.

  12. Clearly what we’re doing as a nation isn’t working and hasn’t been working for a while. So it’s time for real changes. We cannot sustain this for much longer while people are at breaking point. Politicians are only in it to further their own agenda. People simply cannot afford to live, nobody in power cares, nobody is willing to help. Change needs to happen now. This is pathetic.

  13. when are our wages going to rise 11%? or 400% like British Gas profits? ah no we cant have that we would get more inflation then silly!

  14. Might get downvoted but your food is still so much cheaper than in Canada. The prices people are quoting here are often still insanely low. 3 pounds 60 for butter? It’s at least double there. I can’t think of anything under $2 (1 pound 29) now and that’s for the smallest can of tuna you can buy. I know it hurts Brits to have to pay more and that it isn’t really a consolation but in terms of food at least, that’s still something the UK has going for it. It could be a lot worse.

  15. At this stage of the late capitalism era the all and great powerful families and corporations looted everything they could as fast as they could.

These people were part of one of the most corrupt times in the history of humanity.

As the history books will read.

  16. I personally find infuriating when they keep the price but shrink the size.

I usually buy a box that contains 5 snacks.
Last Friday i reasilsed that the snack had shrunk to 4.

I usually buy a box with 12 fish fingers.
We are 3. 4 each. Fine….last week l only had 2 because they reduced them to 10.

Everything is shrinking, even my belly, but please stop disguising inflation behind shrinkflation.
    It’s demeaning for the customers.

  17. It’s rents that have shocked me.

£420 got me a nice 2 bed flat in 2016. That now gets you a room in shared accommodation… and this is the wider leeds area.
