It’s an interesting read, not convinced this is the right subreddit though?
A Irish Newspaper peice about a bigoted American anglophile from early last century, and HBO (American) sticking two fingers up at him with a new production?
>Yet if Lovecraft is an icon he is an increasingly problematic one.
The guy has been dead almost 100 years. I don’t think he’s “increasingly problematic” lol. If you’re the sort of person who’s incapable of separating the person from their art then don’t give his personal life more attention by talking about him.
“News just in! Guy from 100 years ago was racist!”
Well, gee, what a surprise.
I’m Italian, i know he despised Italians too (hell, essentially he despised everyone who wasn’t a 100% patrician English) and i don’t care, he was a genius, a deeply flawed, probably deeply troubled individual but a talented genius nonetheless.
Besides, as far as i know, by the end of his life he started to change his very narrow and admittedly bigoted worldview, problem is, he died too soon to “make amend”. Are we going to consider *problematic* a man whose life was cut too short to show he wasn’t as awful as the woke crowd want him to be?

One of the greatest writers America has ever produced and one of the finest writers of the English language. Anyone curious should read the short story Nyarlathotep, it is about two pages, there isn’t a wasted word, and it fills me with a sense of awe like no other writing. And its free on the internet! Heres a link https://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/n.aspx.
To simplify his character as a bigot shows just how pathetic a lot of people are. Lovecraft hated everything that wasn’t immediately familiar to him… some would label that not as hatred but a severe phobia. A mental illness.
Its almost like all of his work is based on his fear of the unknown and the unfamiliar.
