Putin’s Ukraine genocide is rooted in Russian impunity for Soviet crimes: “Moscow’s boldness owes much to the sense of impunity engendered by a complete lack of accountability for the crimes of the Soviet regime. The world cannot afford to make the same mistake again.”

Ukraine has huge amounts of untapped oil and gas resources and in time was going to be a major competiter to Russia supplying the EU, that’s what this war is all about.
If russia wins the war,its not gonna be prosecuted for war crimes. Whatever you do doesnt matter,if you win
Russians soldiers are the real world version of Orcs. They have no honor, no accountability, no empathy, no mercy, and no gods.
And they have always been like that, ever since the first world war. Russian military only understands one thing: STRENGTH. The only way to impress them and make them back down, is to show you have plenty of it, nothing else matters.
The only reason Romania during WW2 sided with Nazi Germany was because the alternative was having to side with Russia, and we would rather side with a predictable and civilized evil, than with Orcs.
Exactly. Imagine the world where Nazi Germany managed to get nukes and made some kind of a peace deal about returning to the 1937 borders.
It is partly related because they’re openly using similar moves and similar war crimes against the local population, as well as ‘filtration camps’ whcih recall somewhat what the Soviet Union did in occupied territories
Spain has a law still in force, Ley de Amnistía, granting impunity to its war criminals from the Franco dictatorship. Maybe something for the EU to take a look at?
One of the weird quirks of histography. The USSR was not Russia, but Russia wanted to exclusively inherit the legacy of the USSR. So, they inherited full blame for its crimes as well (and try to ignore them).
I think it’s a bit of a stretch, Putin’s boldness seems more easily explained by the lack of accountability for his crimes over the past 20 years.
