56% of rural Active Travel funding unspent in 2021

  1. Local Authorities got the money in May to have designed, spec’d, tendered, awarded & have the contractor in, finished and invoiced by mid-November. Its impossible. All that 56% is spent by now.

  2. Any attempt to take space from cars and give it to active travel is usually thwarted by enraged constituents and counsellors, this seems even more of an issue in rural areas where car is king

  3. I’m curious how much of Galway City’s active travel budget was spent.

The only new infrastructure I can think of is the new pedestrian bridge in progress by the cathedral, and I think that was planned before the new budgets came in.
