Crazy. I wonder, if it were socially acceptable, how many people would give up their children
I think a lot of people got pets in lockdown and may now be struggling to find not only the money but also the time to look after them.
I saw dogs were going for ridiculous prices a couple of years ago.
People acted rashly during lockdown and got animals they ended up not being able to afford or they were made to come in to the office again 5 days a week.
Don’t get a pet you are not willing to take care of until the end.
Imagen your mum gave you away because you suddenly cost her more and your school grades sucked…
Another case where more regulation would assist with recognising which owners are doing so with the animals welfare in mind via a shelter and which are just dumping their animals to avoid missing out on their own luxuries. The former allows a handover of vet documents and can lead to quick rehoming, and the latter are people who should be blacklisted from owning animals for a decade, until they have matured.
I’ve already stated rationing food for my goldfish
People getting bored of their lockdown puppies, I see.
Getting a pet should be far far harder than it is.
So irresponsible. You could see this coming down the track due to lockdown, and almost every February when the xmas puppy hasn’t trained itself or has grown up. I’m sorry but if you have a pet, you need to be committed to look after it. It’s the poor animal I feel sorry for.
Probably all the people who bought puppies during lockdown because they were ‘home all day so it’s fine’
Don’t get pets you can’t afford. For people to be giving up their pets now, means they could probably only just afford them previously. If you can’t comfortably afford a pet taking into consideration what would happen if you lost your job etc, then you shouldn’t own pets.
Those poor animals, they don’t understand what’s going on. Breaks my heart and makes me so angry.
Me and my partner rescued a dog over 3 years ago now, he is about 9 years old. Last few months have been hard with career changes and prices but no matter what, he sticks with us. He is family.
I almost had to give e up my cat, as I’ve recently had to move into a much smaller flat that doesn’t have a garden in order to save money. I managed to cut every other expense and made a deal with the landlord instead of giving him up.
I don’t envy the people that had to make the other choice.
Yet rescues make it so difficult to rescue a dog. Most of them have to have a garden in a quiet area. Live alone with no other pets or kids. Someone has to be home most of the time. Have to come round and do checks on your house. And despite this news there’s less than 20 dogs in my local adoption centre?
And they wonder why people are having fewer children… many can’t even afford a cat or dog, never mind a child!
My cat is now 14 and my little buddy. I could never ever give him up no matter what.
However that said….14 years ago, his insurance wasn’t £80 a month, one packet of 6 tiny wet food pouches wasn’t £2 each, dry food wasn’t £14 per pack.
My wages definitely haven’t risen as much as all that has, and I’m guessing that people didn’t factor in how much things would increase for their pet.
I still would give up food for me before I didn’t feed my cat though. He is absolutely the priority.
He was lying on his cooling mat all weekend like a little king, where as I was on the sofa melting 😂
Generation Rent exacerbates this as well. If you’re being kicked out every couple of months because the landlord wants to put the rent up, you’ll eventually end up in one that doesn’t allow pets.
If only more renters would be allowed pets, I’d definitely rescue one!
Would never give up my dog and thankfully not in the situation that I even need to consider it. Heart goes out to owners that have been pushed to this by greedy cunts.
I’d rather not eat and freeze than give up my dog.
Tragic. But I don’t think these people really understood the commitment to an animal. It’s for life. It’s one of yours. Don’t take it on if you’re not willing to make the sacrifices to look after them.
Breaks my heart to think of giving my boy up. I got him at the start of lockdown and adore him, I’d feed him before myself.
My parents are currently looking after a cat that was abandoned. Trying to find it a forever home. Don’t understand how someone can be so cold. Literally kicked out at the side of the road.
This is nonsense. If you love your animal you don’t give it up because you can’t afford. Ask any homeless person with a dog, for many of them, they prioritise the dog eating before themselves
If energy prices keep going up, my dog might feed us for at least a week…
I’m joking! I’d eat my husband first.
My pet would literally be the last thing I’d give up.
The cat that me and my family rescued is a covid cat. He randomly stumbled in our garden skin to the bone…..we kept him and hes in a caring loving home now 😌
Fuck that, my pets eat better than us. I’d live on beans on toast before I’d consider giving anyone up.
Ah stories like this breaks my heart. We have 2 cats and a dog and both my wife and I agree that we’d go without eating just to care for them. We’re childless and they’re our babies. We would never abandon them no matter what.
>Bastards are giving up their pets in ‘numbers not seen since the 2008 financial crash’ due to cost-of-living crisis

The worst bit is seeing listings on Pets4Homes of people trying to sell their cats & dogs for hundreds or thousands of pounds.
As I was told as a kid,
A dog is for life, not just for Christmas.
I’m not exactly flush with cash, far from it, but there’s no way I could part with my cat no matter how broke I get.
People who give up their pets aren’t people that should have owned them in the first place.
A lot of people will feed their pets before they feed themselves, but when you can’t afford to feed either giving them up is the heartbreaking thing to consider. Starving ourselves is one thing, watching our beloved pets starve is another.
It’s easy to say “oh it’s the people who bought pets irresponsibly in lockdown”, but it’s not like they could have predicted energy and food bills rising so high.
