I wonder could they eat up a slight part of the pedestrian walkway on the prom and use that as a cycle lane instead. Or alternatively cycle in the middle of the lane in the meantime to avoid car doors.
In any event, a greater development of separated cycle lanes is needed throughout Galway. Some of the newer junctions that have been put in in recent years are a complete free for all with cars turning off ha in on to directly cross over a cycle lane which could have cyclists in it.
It’s a fucking disaster.
> They [Councillors] also say that cycling lobbyists in Galway have been, at times, too militant and too assertive.
Yeah I’d say if they’d asked less vehemently the cycling infrastructure would be better.
I ride a motorcycle, best way to get around Galway
So they claim to be moving forward when in reality they’re in full retreat?
Galway City badly needs a ring road to divert all the traffic coming off the N6/N67/N83/N84 away from the needless bottle neck that is the bothar na dtreabh/Headford Rd. So much traffic has to drive through the city instead of being able to go around it.
Ringroad around, tram system with park and ride, get rid of most of car parks in city centre and pedestrianise areas in very centre, solution to make Galway a liveable city not one where your constantly dodging cars
Galway is a medieval city, with a medieval road network, with 130,000 vehicles registered in it.
Needs a bypass/ringroad & a Luas style light rail & the greenway & night buses & better park and ride.
I wonder about some of these twats that write this crap up, if you don’t want cars in the cities provide suitable services and parking outside the cities then.
Most people who are driving don’t usually live in the city, that includes Dublin, Cork and etc, the way I see it stop putting the problem on the public when we use the only decent means of transport because county councils and governments have failed to provide safe, adequate and reliable services that’s the problem.
Galway city council is notoriously inept, possibly the worst local authority in the country
Galway desperately needs a ring road or a bypass. The process has going on for over 20 years. Every time. Plans are submitted for one. The green brigade are out in force with their objections. There are other issues as well, bureaucratic incompetence and whatnot, but planning objections are the biggest.
Those in charge secretly don’t really care, they are getting paid regardless, those making all the engineering reports are getting paid, the lawyers are getting paid, officials are getting paid for talking crap about this, et cetera.
The green brigade need to understand that not everyone can use public transport, some of us are in wheelchairs or have other mobility limitations, tradesmen need to carry tools, goods need to be delivered, et cetera.
Most of the factories that employ tens of thousands are on the east side of the city, the greatest residential centers of the city and on the website. There should be as straightforward connection between the 2 that avoids people having to travel through the city.
This is why I always cycle on the path. Ya won’t die on the path. That’s them bloody walkers problem! Non of them ever signal!
