This will be great for our peace of mind up until they don’t use it for something everyone thinks they should have used it for or they use it for something people think they shouldn’t have used it for.
Then people will start opting out en masse.
First “Remember clocks go back an hour this weekend – just like they have almost every year of your life to date” message I get I’m opting out.
I thought we didn’t want a nanny state?
It’s finally time. This system works great in other countries.
The alert sound better be cool like the US one and not terrifying like the Australian one.
I’m actually surprised, I honestly thought we already had something like this?
>”We will only use it in those very dangerous situations. There’s not going to be a general kind of spam system.”
Oh, I don’t believe that at all!
I wonder if there will be something in place for the 15% of us who don’t own smartphones.
Kind of sobering as someone who’s grown up with the Troubles and lived in a primary target through the cold war and War on terror that terror attacks *might* be added.
Just a reminder, stay scared!
Can you block the number? Hope so or my phone is going in the bin.

To be fair if Russia really does have a working hypersonic missiles capable of hitting the UK in under 3 minutes then by the time you have read the message it’s pretty much game over anyway , I’d rather not know .
Something else where we’re becoming more like America.
Emergency alert system now live:
Brexit MEANS Brexit
Known as the “dead cat emergency generator”
Keep people fearful.
I remember when I was in the US a few years ago and was using a local T-Mobile USA SIM, I was standing in the middle of a supermarket when just about every mobile phone went off for an amber alert including mine, scared the crap out of me as I had never heard my phone make that sound before.
Everyone else more or less ignored it.
I get these messages in Korea and they work really well, I just can’t see the UK being able to implement them properly.
Kind of thankful it’s not been deployed months ago, imagine getting an emergency alert with current PM.

>ALERT! CARRIES GONE OUT AND I’M HANKERING! BRING OWN BOOZE AND NIBBLES FOR SAUSAGE NIGHT! DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE LIGHTS OR NOISE, HAVING SOME MATES OVER FROM MOSC..HESTER!
EMERGENCY ALERT: Labour plans will bankrupt country.
EMERGENCY ALERT: Vote Tory in your local election.
And it wouldn’t surprise me when used appropriately the system has some unforeseen 24 hour delay or costs £1,000 per recipient with plenty of tory-connected share holders.
Don’t we already have something like this?
Excluding Churchills declaration of the start of war with germany, and the subsequent end of war a few years later, I can not think of a single instance when this system would have been at all useful.
Just one more reason I glad i gave up using a phone.
I just looked up the requirements for this. The official page states it only works on 4G or 5G networks and definitely won’t work on 2G or 3G. It also says it requires you to keep your phone up to date and the current minimum requirements are iOS 14.5 or Android 11.
So if you’re the kind of person that hangs onto older phones, or can’t afford a phone at all, or your phone doesn’t support 4G or 5G, or your phone supports 4G or 5G but you didn’t update your SIM, or you’re in an area without 4G or 5G coverage you won’t be alerted when we get nuked.
