Thousands of patients forced to travel far from home for NHS mental health treatment

  1. This was the norm well before 2017 when I arrived to the UK

People are now doing that to get physical health care too.

  2. Frankly I’m amazed there’s still any kind of mental health treatment available on the NHS aside from pills. I’ve had friends on various mental health waiting lists for years. The general consensus is that unless you’re about to kill yourself, you’ll be given SSRIs and that’s about the extent of your treatment.

  3. I was on a waitlist for a few years for an ADHD diagnosis, I ended up going private in the end as it was having too much of an impact on my work.

The NHS is absolutely shocking when it comes to mental health.

  4. NHS right now shocked me. Had a car accident & need a hernia operation. Not been in my local GP for 7-8 years and was shocked they no longer do walk ins and have to wait for a phone call post e-consult which could take 1-2 weeks. Going private and going BUPA now through work. Suddenly the USA insurance system doesn’t seem too bad.

  5. I’m on the autistic spectrum and I also believe I have ADHD which has been missed because of the autism. My executive dysfunction has been dire since COVID started, to the point where trivial tasks feel like they are impossible.

I’ve tried to be seen through the NHS and the waiting times are about 3 years, I believe.

Now, I know it’s not quite the same as the people having to travel the country, but my point is that the state of the mental health services in this country are disgusting and need a serious reform… but I don’t expect that from the party that’s put the country through the meat grinder.

  6. If I’m ever ill enough to become an inpatient, I’ll be so fucking far past caring where. There’s a big difference between someone who’s manic and a young person with an eating disorder, which makes me wonder if the numbers aren’t quite as bad as at first glance.

But yeah, the lack of psychiatric beds is shocking.

  7. Tell me about it told to travel 6 hours away by train that’s fking like 100£ every 1-3 mouths

  8. It does not help when you need more specialist treatment. Good luck getting help at an eating disorder clinic near you, where places at the few existing centres are as rare as hen’s teeth. Even if you do get a place, they will get your weight back to a healthy level and then discharge you as quickly as possible, even though the underlying problems can take years to identify and deal with (obsession with food and weight is just how the anxiety manifests itself). Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental health issues but getting proper treatment is not an option for most sufferers.
