Article is behind a paywall. I found Bouchez’s reaction quite funny:
*At the MR, they say they are “getting tired of Ecolo-Groen’s taxing rage”. There was already an agreement in government a few months ago to tax short distance air travel,” says Georges-Louis Bouchez. Let’s already apply this measure.”*
*And the Liberal party points out that this proposal comes from Groen, the party that has jurisdiction over energy in the federal government. “Let Groen act first to extend the nuclear power plants, rather than to build hyperpolluting gas power plants,” the liberal president tackles. That is the best way to fight global warming.”*
Two things can be true at the same time: Green parties did a dumb thing campaigning on the closure of nuclear power if their replacement is more gas power, AND private jets should be taxed.
Fuck the MR. I guess Bouchez has a private jet or stock in some private jet company?
I don’t know how much they are proposing to tax private jet flights, but they should at least double it.
A climate tax will be introduced for short flights, so imo they should calculate how many people the private jet could transport if it were used as a commercial plane and tax every flight for that amount of people.
The MR really works hard at reminding everyone they are not “the party of people that work hard” but welll “the party of the ultra rich” – some weeks ago they were protesting against housing regulation in Brussels that would “prevent young couples to buy their first appartements”… the regulation was about places of more than 750 square meters.

Between that and now the jets, they show their true colors. I’m still puzzled “hard working people” vote for them….
Modes of transport the emits more CO² per passenger and per Km travelled should cost more, even that’s allready the case. I don’t really care about the way to get there, but we can and should argue about how quick the change and how high the price hike.
I’m usually between the center and the right politically, but I’m with Ecolo on this one.
abolish the greens
We should tax all flights more, including private jets.
Dat dit soort populisme nog vaak mag gebeuren
Taxes should be corralated to your salary. If not, only poor people are really impacted. ( Same for the fines)
Usually the problem with these taxes is that it’s all about ideology.
“Rich must pay”
Rich already pay more than anyone else, where should we stop? They made money paid a lot of taxes, that’s the system.
I only have access to the first few lines of the article, but here it seems to be calculated based on the pollution implied by this kind of transportation.
This is the right kind of taxes!
You don’t pay because you’re rich, you pay because you pollute more than others.
If we could calculate the right cost of everything, based on the cost it would take to set this operation neutral in term of planet impact, I feel we’d have less debate about ideology.
When did proposing something popular become something bad?
They need to tax all tickets 25 to 100%.
Well it’s not like taxing 300 flights a year will save a lot of emissions nor will it make a lot of money for the fiscus
This idea focus more on taxing the rich than pollution …
The only thing greens ever want is to tax stuff, f*ck the greens.
With every proposal the greens make a tax is added.
I mean sure but of all things you could campaign for to reduce our emissions this seems rather low on the priority list?
I’d think campaigning for green service vehicles for example would be more effective? Or with the current drought, for a water management master plan?
Or for improved public transport?
