Mental it’s taken 3 years for Starmer to take a meaningful stand that potentially resonates with the voting public.
*Edit: seeing a lot of infighting amongst the comments here. IMO the only way to get the tories out, is for the centre left parties to be pragmatic and put differences aside. Look at how the minority Tory/lib dem coalition 10 years ago enabled a quiet way into power for this current bunch of right wing nutters. There’s no silver bullet we can take here, we just need to make ourselves collectively electable. That starts with some meaningful, alternative policies – which I think Labour (and the Greens and SNP) are starting to produce.*
How’s a policy like this supposed to work?
Almost like Gordon Brown’s intervention is forcing him to do something other than telling Johnson off.
OK, so I take it he’s suggesting the government tops the rest of the costs up then? Or is he just shouting from the rooftop and saying “you can only sell to U.K. based private customers (businesses are excluded from the price cap) for significantly less than you can sell to the French etc.”? Or is he saying that the companies will just need to eat it and sell at a loss?
I’m OK with saying the first, the second would surely lead to blackouts in Britain as the suppliers will refuse to sell to British consumers?
Futile statement. Rise will happen.
Won’t happen under the tories unfortunately. They’ll offer us a few more pennies to help if we’re lucky.
I’m all for some sort of intervention considering the current energy situation…but wouldn’t this mean every energy company will go bust, seeing as £1,971 wouldn’t even cover their wholesale energy costs?
Why not just force supermarkets to give away food while you’re at it?
Could Starmer also force all banks to lend money at 0% interest?
Any other bright ideas?
It’s one of the only ways out. Emergency payments won’t go on forever and if the increased prices don’t go down soon, they will just become ‘the normal price’.
Jesus Christ what more do people want from the guy? He announces something good and you gurn and nitpick. He doesn’t say something & you complain he hasn’t made a statement. While a blind eye is turned to whatever the Tories are doing.
It will be one of them that gets in. Let’s maybe not have it be the one who wants our bills to triple, to cancel green energy and to bring back shillings and sixpences!
Left of Starmer and usually dislike him, but the people trying to find ways to shit on him purely because he isn’t Corbyn on a policy they should be agreeing with is insane.
Is it good enough? Maybe not, but we want to embrace every step that is positive and then push on that further. Saying “nice but we want more” is entirely possible and is the mature response to this if you were desperate for nationalisation
At last! Sensible option and no reason why Ofgem isn’t forced to do this. Gordon Brown still has great ideas- oh we all should wish for good old days with political heavyweights in charge.
I tried looking at the warmer home discount today on British Gas. There’s a message that the government are reconsidering what do to.
I love the torie government, socialism for the rich and nothing for the working class/poor
How is it to be funded?
Read up on Murdoch Media and their intentions. You are being manipulated to thinking good ideas like this, from people like Starmer aren’t in your best interest.
No matter who leads the Labour Party you will be told to hate them and the things they say. But its not about the leader. Its about their policies.
I love the UK, but it hurts to see my country, with United in the fucking title, rip each other apart for no real reason but for tribal monkey brain shit.
Vote Labour, Not because you like Starmer and want to have a beer with him, vote for the party because your sick of the stagnent, unstable government. Whats the worse that could happen? More stagnation and instability? Change, begets Change.
Its time we think for ourselves once more and no one should have to tell you, you should or SHOULDNT vote for a party. You vote for YOUR best intrests, but always think deeper when reading things that dont come straight from the party mouth.
TL:DR ; Vote labour you stupid Sky news watching Bastard. Love you.
What would be really nice, is that all the opposition parties UNITE so that the vote isn’t fragmented so much and we can pretty much guarantee that these thieves and.liars are removed from power NOW.
Then, when they’re in charge, actually reform things, like the broken voting system, they start to work towards a cleaner, greener future, reinvest in education, the NHS and so on.
Leaving the EU was an absolute fuck up beyond any comprehension so we should work to getting back into the club ASAP.
NEXT, we need to stop being so reliant on foreign energy and food. I’d rather have food security than all year around availability of certain things (although with a better partnership with Europe, we still can have this).
Build some more nuclear plants and get the wind and solar stuff “levelled up” massively too.
Force ALL new builds and company warehouse/buildings to have solar on them.
Get actual experts in to advise, stop making policies that are popular and start doing something to try to stop or reverse this absolutely disastrous species ending catastrophe that we are all starting to see and feel before it is too late.
Any climate change deniers need to fuck off or be taken the the tower for crimes against humanity.
End rant, also, vote for me, fuck it, I’ll do all this shit.
Good. Actual meaningful policy change. Keep it up
What this effectively means is a massive state (therefore tax paid for) subsidy for private companies. The state will literally pay oil and gas producers billions of pounds.
Cap to remain??? Needs to be drastically lower.
This wouldn’t work – all energy companies would go bust
Holy shit he’s done it. He’s finally come up with an actual policy that anyone gives a shit about!
Good man, but unfortunately he can call for what he likes it wont change this governments policy to those who are not rich.
Is this even feasible, he can’t cap the generators. They are largely foreign entities, so doesn’t capping the energy companies just risk them becoming insolvent?
It’s not like we haven’t lost other energy companies in this crisis
I can’t believe how many people still don’t know why we’re paying as much as we are.
Yes, let’s lower the cap, but in tandem with tackling another issue that’ll allow suppliers to stay afloat: fix the fucking buying system. You know why producers are making so much? Because they own renewables, and are getting paid gas prices for them because gas dictates the price of the entire market.
And our wonderful government are planning on spending two years reviewing the current system before even bothering to come up with a solution. (Hyperbole warning) they could fix it next month by just fixing the fucking system so that the last fuel in the door doesn’t set the price for the entire market.
And what? Force them all into a net loss position, bankrupting everyone and scaring off investors?
The price for energy is made on the commodities market which is set by speculators on Wall Street.
There is no way out of this. We are paying for decades of government neglect. It’s too little too late.
They handed over the trust of energy to a greedy private sector who put all their eggs where the most margin was… natural gas.
When our government should have been regulating, diversifing and investing in what’s best for Britons, they were busy taking bribes.
I will probably vote Labour, not because of their genius ideas… but because it’s not what we have now.
Good one. You finally make a statement of any merit. But how would we fund the energy companies haemorrhaging cash ?
The corruption in government must be quite staggering to allow this to happen.
You can almost guarantee that the politicians are having their pockets lined very nicely by the energy companies. Ofgem officials will be subject to the same thing too.
Sadly, it probably makes little difference who is in government as long as lobbyists exist. Perhaps the greatest change to politics would be to completely ban lobbying and make it punishable by lengthy prison time.
You can’t cap prices without controlling the market.
Be careful Keir, that was dangerously close to an opinion
