He’s finished and is going to have to resign, that’s clear enough.
The interesting question is why the media have gone after him and why now.
I imagine he’s going to be a wiser and sadder man, and hopefully a slightly poorer one, very soon.
I know a few people whose tenancies aren’t registered with RTB, but they’re hardly gonna report their landlord and risk ending up homeless. I bet the figures are heeeeeavily skewed!
So I expect to be downvoted for this – which is why I’ll say at the outset that Troy is a disgrace. He is clearly someone who thinks that laws, be they ethics laws or laws relating to tenancies, are something that he passes for others to abide by, but are not something he need concern himself with.
That said, the RTB register is a disaster. There is some clever language I think being used here by the RTB in responding to a press query. I’ve little doubt that what they’re saying is correct – the register is updated weekly. The register however contains a lot more information than is accessible when checking the online version. I know from experience that tenancies that are in fact registered more often than I would expect do not appear when searched online. When I want to check one now I call the RTB if it doesn’t appear online, and usually it is in fact registered.
Troy has form in not caring about his legal obligations, that’s clear. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hasn’t registered. However, I also wouldn’t be surprised if he has and it’s simply not appearing online – especially given that he’s apparently provided an RT number for one property that they aren’t able to find in the search.
This is just taking the piss. He’s making so much money out of the housing crisis and now it emerges he wasn’t even bothered registering with rtb. Paid in cash and no rtb registration? Wouldn’t be surprised if more revelations follow.
Surely he has to resign at this stage? If not SF will hammer FF over this , it’s perfect ammo to paint them as the corrupt brown envelope loving chancers that they are.
He is keeping it as a surprise.
A post office? Is this a tenancy or a commercial rental? Are commercial rentals registered with RTB?
No politicians should be able to own a business or own rental properties while they’re in office as it’s a conflict of interest with the work they do
He also claimed rent a room relief. As a former Revenue employee I’ve seen this as a ploy to cover cash lodgements to your bank. This was probably covering the cash rent he received but nobody was actually living in his house.
