They’re whoring some popularity again, they’ve had the chance plenty of times to open this discussion.
Ik beschouw alcohol en nicotine als softdrugs.
Het is vooral sociale en politieke druk die mensen er toe aanzet te denken dat dit niet zo is.
In de praktijk is er geen verschil.
For soft-drugs it’s not a bad idea. Usage is so widespread we might as well regulate and tax it, since keeping it illegal has failed to stop basically anyone from using it.
But you know, VLD is never going to seriously propose this as long as CD&V and N-VA are their most likely coalition partners.
Create a system where people need to be informed about drug effects and safety before they can buy them. Maybe a simple 1-2 hour lecture with a basic pop quiz at the end.
This system should include harder drugs but also other softdrugs like alcohol, tobacco, coffee,…
Edit: “before they can buy them” means you need to pass once to be allowed to purchase the drug for the rest of your lifetime.
It would be a seperate lecture and test for every individual drug one wants to consume
Ja, zeker, succes onderhandeling met N-VA en CD&V.
Yes, but all advertising and sale in public places (like in super-markets) should be illegal, as it should actually also be for alcohol and tobacco (but isn’t.. ). Sale should happen in discrete places, with no advertising on the windows. No noticeable smell outside or anything, and properly strictly regulated.
And this is coming from someone who enjoys some weed every now and then myself. I think it’s ridiculous that it is illegal and that I, in theory, risk getting prosecuted for having a couple of grams, however I don’t want it to become common place and get highschool kids to start getting tempted into using it.
All drugs should be legal. Wars on drugs don’t work.
i see a lot of people in the comments saying to legalize and tax. you’re wrong, taxation on my weed is 100% theft and i will just end up growing it then.
Probably an unpopular opinion here, but I say no
I lived in places where alcohol was harder to come by, and I noticed that my consumption decreased a lot. To clarify: it was still legal and relatively easy to buy whichever alcohol you like, but because of limited selling points and no home delivery, it takes some effort to go and buy it, so your “casual” consumption goes down a lot. It’s more something you do when you really enjoy it or really crave it since it takes some planning. As soon as I came back here, my alcohol consumption shot up again simply because alcohol is _everywhere_ — every night shop has a fridge full of beer, any horeca sells beer and wine, there even used to be Jupiler vending machines on train platforms. Turns out you drink more when you can buy alcohol in minutes day and night than when you need to physically travel somewhere
So I’m concerned the same phenomenon would appear with weed. If we normalise weed, people will start consuming it more casually and it will become a part of, well, normal everyday life, in the same way that we drink and smoke tobacco casually. It’s those who don’t smoke weed who will have to justify themselves in the same way that not drinking on a night out inevitably becomes a discussion topic. When weed is illegal, it’s those who do it that have to be mindful of the company they’re in, not the other way around
Now no matter how much we rationalise the psychedelic effect of drugs, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s at least a carcinogenic substance which causes all sorts of health issues, in the same way as alcohol and tobacco do
So no, don’t legalise weed, and in fact while we’re at it curb the promotion of alcohol in the same way we curbed the promotion of tobacco. Let’s be rational and discourage _all_ harmful substances instead of making them more easily available
Yes, obviously. The world drug policy is built on lies and politics that have more to do with racism than anything remotely based on current medical, scientific knowledge. Even moron countries like the USA are seeing the light. It’s embarassing Europe is so far behind.
Doen.
All for it, but this is just a stunt. They will never do so nor push for it. Maybe they can get some votes from Groen/Vooruit/PVDA this way (no insult but I presume these parties have members that would approve this) but that’s all this is: getting people to think they would do so but never being serious.
Sure. Taxes!
Het wordt tijd dat het gelegaliseerd wordt:
1. Blowers zullen blijven blowen
2. Je kan de kwaliteit reguleren
3. Je hoeft niet via via wiet te kopen (kwaliteitsgarantie voor de gebruiker)
4. Je kan het belasten.
Long overdue for a country that loves its taxes so much.
Also: Fuck every politico (with extra to Bart DeWever) who set back the weed legalization movement that was working under the cannabis club model like Trekt U Plant. Golden opportunity for a model to start with and instead they shut it all down.
Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Yes, i think it should be legal. It’s ridiculous that it is considered more harmful than alcohol.
Nop
Many already are, nicotine and alcohol are widely available. Might as well finish the job.
Open VLD trying to cash in on the war on drugs (cocaine) in Antwerp.
Classy!
Some member(s?) of the party have been known to do (a lot) worse..
Populism, VLD trying to score young voters by making promises they won’t fullfill. Either because they don’t mean it or because they won’t get enough support in the chambre
Obviously
4.20% tax it
I am not a fan. I have personally seen what drugs and alcohol does to people and families. And for those who use the status of alcohol in Belgium as an excuse. We have a terrible alcohol abuse in our country it is not something to be proud of.
And more hit and runs by people who under influence? No thanks
You can order cannabis seeds, mushroom spores/growkits, mescaline cactuses, ayahuasca herbs, and all kinds of psychoactive plants as well as research chemicals from the Netherlands already. Pretty much every smartshop and cannabis seed bank ships all over Europe.
While it’s technically illegal, it’s pretty much as easy as buying on Amazon, and the odds that your stuff will be seized is close to zero. People even ship weed or hard drugs through the mail and it usually goes through no problem. In fact, it’s safer to send your leftover weed from Amsterdam than it is to carry it with you on the train.
There’s never gonna be the same pressure to legalize as in America. No one gets 20 years in jail for possession of weed in Belgium. It would be nice if it were legal but no one is really waiting for it to become legal. It’s already there. The only people who are losing in on it is the government. All that tax money…
Another way of the goverment to tax us whiiiii
For real, don’t really care, I’m not a user but Cannabis is safer than alcohol so legalize it why not.
Puike prestatie…
Alles zou legaal moeten zijn.
I’m curious, are there any large scale polls across the voter base what the public consensus on the topic is? I would be very much surprised if in the range of say 18-40 y.o. the overwhelming majority would be for anything besides at the least decriminalization. Even most of the people that don’t like cannabis and would never do it are usually absolutely fine with others being able to do it as long they don’t do it on the street or anything. I really have never heard the position of “if someone smokes weed they should get legal punishment”.
If this is true, how is it possible that it is such a controversial stance for politicians?
Giving people a clean source of weed instead of the garbage that is sold on the streets will not only reduce crime but also general health. A lot of studies show that the use of pure weed is quite harmless (way less than tobacco and alcohol in any case) and I haven’t even started about the new opportunities for farmers and the taxes it would bring in.
But alas, instead BDW insists on criminalising it even further and pumping endless resources in the waste that’s called “the war on drugs”.
Base drug laws on their harmfulness, all the rest is arbitrary. For example if lsd is less harmful than alcohol, and alcohol is legal, than lsd should be legal too.
I hate alcoholics calling someone who smokes just a blunt on a party “marginaal”. Legalize!
Een dikke ja
Yea why not, im not smoker but its more profitable when legalised
