How do we make data sustainable? No megabits without megawatts. Power hungry datacenters and grid congestion don’t mix well. In Dublin data centers are hogging about 11 percent of Ireland’s power grid capacity.

  1. Well since they’re too pussy to raise the skyline put wind turbines on the roof of every building. No building will be in the way to block it.

  2. The majority of those data centres (amazon, apple and Facebook) are engaged in corporate PPAs directly with windfarm operators.

    So they are already linked.

There’s a thread further up asking why ireland is so good on solar and wind energy.

It’s because the corporate data centre demand for renewable energy is encouraging renewable investment in ireland.

If the govt got their finger out and upgraded the infrastructure. Got the DS3 working properly, and encouraged investment in complimentary generation we’d be fine. But they’ve left everything up to the market as usual. That’s why they’re talking about brown outs.

  3. If you add together all the electrons moving around to make the internet work at any given time it would weigh the same as a strawberry so has anyone asked Wexford how they do it?
