What’s his material about? Never heard of him, and surprisingly YouTube offerings are thin on the ground.
I hear he called Sunak a ‘p***’ and then got his dick out in front of a woman.
If true, it’s hilarious how everyone is defending this man without confirmation of what he’s actually done.
“There is no such thing as cancel culture”
I met him once, many years ago …. probably 1999 or around then. He was doing a show in town and he came in for an interview at the radio station I worked in.
I found him to be a charming and genial person. We got talking and he offered to lend me his collection of Saturday Night Live video tapes. Out of nowhere really. Just a nice, laidback guy who gets his aggression out in his act.
Before that, in the ’80s, I got a copy of his album Gobshite from Virgin Records. I think he privately pressed them himself. What a carve-up. He nailed Jimmy Savile on the record. One of the first to do it publicly iirc.
Had the pleasure of meeting Jerry at a charity do once. He was surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny.
>”The Pleasance is a venue that champions freedom of speech”
Funnier joke than anything I’ve heard from Sadowitz tbf.
cancelled from comedy because he “expressed opinions that are not acceptable”. Nothing to be concerned about here…..
No venue has any obligation to host anyone, and if they want to cancel any future performances then that’s their right, but it seems a little disingenuous to do so and then turn around and claim you’re “a venue that champions freedom of speech and we do not censor comedians’ material”.
Have your cake or eat it; you can’t do both.
If only the Pleasance, a Scottish comedy venue, knew what they were getting into when they booked legendary Scottish comedian Jerry fuckin’ Sadowitz.
My dad introduced me to the delights of Jerry Sadowitz. Absolutely brilliant
When I was at uni I saw this guy. This was 20 years ago and it was “controversial” to see him then. Think he was banned from telly after some show on channel 5, or at least that was the rumour.
I remember trying to defend his gig as some kind of performance art. He basically made really basic insults about the news. Something like, I see beckham didn’t score, what a prick. It was zero content or build.
When the audience started drifting he then got his penis out, put a pair of glasses on it and started shouting “look Charles de Gaul”.
I assumed he just gave up as I can’t imagine that passing now. It barely passed back then
I saw that show (assuming he’s touring the same.one as at the Glasgow Comedy Festival.) It was the most offensive shit I’ve ever heard a human being say in person. He should be allowed to say it. He’s a fantastic comedian.
Jerry is a comedic genius. He is a very skilled card illusions/trick slight of hand in his act. Very hard working. He’s methodical in his set ups. With him holding on to the edge and seeing no limit to the depths of dark comedic cuntery. Unlike other comics, he’s not really changed. It’s the same as it’s always been. Wild but not interesting and sometimes funny.
Disregarding any subjective opinion about whether this is funny or acceptable (I don’t know as I haven’t seen him perform, I just know of his reputation), it’s strange for a venue to hire a comedian with a lengthy and well known reputation for being completely depraved and fucked up, and then complain when he does completely depraved and fucked up things.
I think this is the first I’ve heard of him since he has his own show on Channel 5 in the early years. Pretty absurd to be saying that the venue is pro free speech, as long as we agree with it, but that’s what you get with the old “freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from responsibility”. By the way, yes I do know that freedom of speech means freedom from legal penalties for speech, not the right to a platform at a particular venue, but it was the venue saying that they support freedom of speech at their venue as long as all ideas expressed in their venue fall in lockstep with their “values”.
What kind of self-loathing fool would actually pay to see a Jerry Sadowitz show and then complain that they had been offended? – it’s as if the world is being overrun with these fucking idiots.
The most offensive thing about Jerry Sadowitz is that he hasn’t written any new material or updated his act since the 1980s.
He’s not the first comedian, and he sure won’t be the last, to get cancelled.
Welcome to the modern world, where people expect their comedy shows to never push any boundaries, and to never hold a mirror up to the ugly side of society. Where only safe, pre-approved “comedy” is allowed, which only targets the safe pre-approved bullseyes. All rules of comedy is made and set by the most unfunniest of humourless bores who enjoy nothing more than lecturing people on what is and isn’t funny, and what is and isn’t OK to laugh at.
Christ, whatever happened to, “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.”?
Nowadays, it’s; “If you don’t like it, complain loudly, continuously and obnoxiously, until no one else can watch it.”
Ahh the comedy that offends! Does anyone have a link to the old channel 4 show from back in the day?
Fuck me, “Opinions such as those displayed on stage by Sadowitz are not acceptable”
I don’t like that kind of language. It’s very worrying.
I’m curious what exactly was so bad about this show that it was cancelled.
Also, the guy’s a comedian. Assuming his act is comedy, what the hell is wrong with a venue when it can’t distinguish comedy from actual reality.
This is why I generally watch more edgy comedians now. Because they’re not afraid to tell jokes that might offend. And because 99% of the time, the joke is at the expense of themselves and their own ignorance (deliberately) or the audiences.
Don’t pay to see Jerry Sadowitz then complain that you’re offended. Being offensive is his thing.
We stand for freedom of speech but only if it aligns with our values is what they should have said.
How many complaints did they receive and shout what, we are not willing to disclose this information.
So you dont stand for free speech then.
Seen him live in Brighton around 10+ years ago. If you know his act then you know it ain’t for everyone. Especially in these current times where it’s hard to make a joke without offending someone. Yes his act has shock value and I get that’s why people would go to see him. If your going in blind expecting something like Michael McIntyre then stay away lol, also don’t sit too close to the front as he sprays first 2 rows with spit from his constant ranting which to me is worse than seeing his cock
Soon there will be no comedy because someone will get offended and cancel Every show.
The man who used to start his show with the line… Nelson Mandela, what a cunt…?
The guy who told a “joke” which involved using a dead baby as a condom to rape your grandfather?
The guy that was once punched by an audience member at the Montreal comedy festival, after he came on stage with the words: “Hello moose-fuckers. You know what I hate about this country? Half of you speak French and the other half let them.”
Hard to believe him saying or doing anything that would be offensive in this day and age
There’s a funny irony to people saying they’ll boycott the venue etc for making a decision they don’t like, while also complaining about cancel culture.
He is playing a character, for what it’s worth. Ive been a fan, if you could call me that, since the 90s.
It’s not for me to say, really, but my take on Sadowitz is that he aims at finding that awkward spot in comedy. Part of the problem has been that down the years his audience has become aware it’s also broadly split into two types: Guardian reading liberals, largely well educated, white and male, who consider themselves in on the joke (like me), and brash right wing, moneyed-up loadsamoney types who heard he tells racist and intolerant jokes and want to enjoy that. I’m not the first to point this out, to be fair, but you do notice it.
Last time I saw him in soho a few years ago, there was a group of the latter in the front row. It’s London so you can spot them a mile off. He directed a lot of his more vicious, nasty stuff at them, calling them out frequently. Initially they laughed then not so much. He seems to zeros in on whoever he has in the audience, adapting on the fly to find their awkward spot. It can be an entertaining piece of nihilistic self sabotage or just plain uncomfortable. It’s always engaging.
His close up magic is exceptional. He worked in that well known magic shop in Clerkenwell road and, I believe, played a part in recommending a then unknown Derren Brown to TV execs. Apparently Brown was starting out, always in the shop hoovering up info etc. Jerry Sadowitz has been around *long* time now.
Who the fuck deliberately pays and goes to a Sadowitz show and complains about the content? He’s been doing the same stuff for decades. People are such whiney babies I swear. The complainants go out of their way to find something they can be offended by ffs. And shame on the venue for its hypocrisy.
Update – new statement directly from Jerry Sadowitz following statement earlier from venue.

I am astonished at all the children here who seem to think nudity on stage is a crime.
