It remains a matter of controversy among Irish historians as to when the country gained independence, but 1921 was the first time that international recognition was granted, with membership in various political and sporting organisations following, and full control of defence and foreign affairs.

    EDIT: De Valera was not right to enter into a civil war on the matter he was right that the agreement was made under duress
