>A sign says that the retail units are available for rent but that too is an illusion, says Labour Councillor Darragh Moriarty.
>A longstanding dispute between Dublin City Council and the developer means those shops have never been available for rent, he says.
>He hasn’t been able to find out the exact nature of the dispute, but 13 years on, the council should have sorted that out, he says.
>Small businesses, community and arts organisations are crying out for community space, says Moriarty. “Here you have a prime location, slap bang in the middle of Dublin 8 … just shuttered up for the best part of 15 years.”
Absolutely ridiculous.
I wouldn’t open a business round that area either to be fair. I was in the (very nicely kitted out) apartments opposite the luas stop a few months back and guards were searching the dry riser things on each floor for drugs while being taunted by the local Canada goose garbed scrotes.
It would really annoy me if I lived in one of those apartments. They could have all sorts of shops a short step out of the door but instead they have to look at big ugly fake shopfronts
Same with the ‘regenerated’ ballymun . Insurance costs and antisocial behaviour make opening shops in these locations a losing bet
