SwissPass sent me a reminder that I should pay for their services for this coming year…..I used it last year (paid of course) and did not renew it as I simply don’t need it any longer….I never asked for a renewal for a SwissPass….How is this correct please (Or even legal)?….Thanks

  1. When you signed up for it you agreed to a contract that does auto-renew unless you cancel it.

It’s the same as with your phone or internet contract, your insurances or the flat you rent. You don’t have to sign up again each year. As long as you don’t cancel it, it continues.

  2. Their terms of service spell it out quite clearly that it renews automatically unless you cancel a month before it renews. When you bought your Halbtax you agreed to these Terms of Service.

  3. Automatic renewal is something that happens everywhere insurances, telephone, Norton subscription, everything that exists.

  4. It is a common Swiss (mal)practise that most subscriptions, insurances, rentals, gyms, younameit auto-renew unless you cancel them by the rule of their book. You’ll have to keep tabs on everything you ever subscribe to in order to get out of it in an orderly way. First rule of contract-reading before signing: “How can I get out of it”.

Not consumer-friendly at all, but legal, unfortunately.

  5. I remember when there was some sort of special where we got the Swiss Pass at half the price. When we bought it at the counter we had been made aware of the subscription model several times. When we asked how to deal with it we were offered to have it canceled right away after the purchase. This way it will be valid for the purchased time and automatically end if you do not extend it. (just like it should be)

  6. Unfortunately this is legal in Switzerland. If you don’t want to renew a service is always better to notify it with a written letter, the sooner the better.

  7. They send you an email 1 month prior the renew date to cancel if you don’t want to renew it. Not a lot of companies do that.
