I was in that crowd! One of the best moments of my recent holiday in Warsaw.
1st August is an amazing day to be in Poland’s capital…. 🙂
“Pójdziemy razem do zwycięstwa,
gdy ramię w ramię stanie lud”
“We’ll march together to victory
when people stand shoulder to shoulder”
The result: upwards to 200 000 dead, the razing of Warsaw, destruction of priceless historical monuments and archives.
**We must never forget both the courage of our people and the price they paid for it.** Yet politicians turn this anniversary into a festive celebration of patriotism and would like us to forget that the Warsaw Rising of 1944^1 was the result of a tragic mistake at best and criminal irresponsibility at worst. After five years of German terror, the Polish command had no excuse of not knowing what the occupiers were capable of.
^1 Unlike the Warsaw Ghetto Rising of 1943 which started when the Jewish resistance got wind of the preparations for the last transport to Auschwitz and was a gesture of defiance in the face of death.
