What is this? Been in UK for a few years now, seen it a few times here and there. Square shape, about a 100ft on each side. Looks like some sort of playing field.

  1. Definitely crown green bowling greens. Look at them very closely. They are not quite flat. They rise slightly towards the middle. There is a “gutter” round the edge to catch stray bowls. My Grandad and my Dad played the game.

  2. I would guess – as some others have noted (because it isn’t grass!) – that it’s pétanque (boules, jeu de boules, French bowls) pitches.
Basically from appreciation of this wonderful game from many (middle class) people holidaying in France…

  3. Nah, I’d say they are for the Frenchy bowls game, boules non..? J’m’excuse pétanque…

Also I bloody love it and challenging anyone to a match up eh

  4. Thanks for all the answers. I will go and presume it’s pétanque. Though I always thought, that would have a somewhat elongated playing field and way more narrow. Maybe this was constructed with more than one group playing at a given time?

As for the grass, I don’t think this was ever meant to have grass. It’s sand or something very similar to that. The wooden separators also have numbers on the inner sides. Up to 15 if I am not mistaken. Probably I should’ve addedd this as an info straight. I am less of a poster and more of a lulker on reddit.
