Finland Is Reported to Pick F-35 Jets in $11 Billion Tender

  1. Yeah because manned fighter jets are needed for what? This dumbness in the purest form. Foreign American diplomacy = business development.

  2. Well its only a [rumor](https://www.reddit.com/r/sweden/comments/r9ng7j/comment/hnd7yu5/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3).

    >Greetings from Finland, it pays to take this rumor with a pinch of salt.

    >If you follow the rumor chain, it starts with an article in Helsingin Sanomat which discusses that several countries in Europe have acquired the F-35 but that this can not be taken as a sign that Finland chooses the same. Next is the evening paper Iltalehti which refers to “anonymous sources” to claim that the decision was made, they often do this just to make headlines. Funny that SVT dares to take note of something Iltalehti writes…

    >The Armed Forces has repeatedly said that they will not comment on the decision-making process before the election is finalized. Those who know are probably reliable and do not leak to the gossip press (it would be a lawsuit if someone did it). I think it would be rewarding for our defense cooperation if Finland chose Gripen, but unfortunately I have no voice whatsoever in that decision 🙂

  3. I suppose if you buy these and need a bit of backup if anything kicks off the yanks might help you out.

I wouldn’t like to have to rely on the French coming to my aid if I bought a few rafales.

  4. Aircraft like the Rafale are good for poor countries and dictators but the F-35 is the obvious choice for anyone who can get their hands on it.

  5. If this ends up being true, based Finland. It’s certainly rich enough to afford the cutting edge, rather than the cheaper but less capable option.

  6. arent S400 at the russina border? also finland would be flat so there is a risk that AA would in the end find out what kind off radar signature the plan has.

  7. We need that North coverage. F35s are really flying sensors pinned into the networks. Always feeding the data.

  8. Just a rumour at this point.

The defence forces have already given their assessment to the government and the new fighter will be decided before Christmas, but that is all we really know for sure at this point.

But yeah, the F-35A is in a very strong position to win the deal I’d say myself.

  9. Isn’t this already an obsolete aircraft?

Going to be expensive to maintain specially with mounting debt, and covid isn’t helping much.

But oh! let’s increase taxation to cover it all.

Wonder how did Lockhead lobby for their fighter? Some deals behind closed doors? Girls?

  10. Hopefully in a timeframe not too long from now, the EU can have the same regulation the good old US of A has regarding foreign made military equipment so some of it would benefit the EU economy on purchase.

On a side note, buying USA made instead of EU made aircraft is just making the latter more expensive relatively. You might think it is the best option for your country, but on a strategic level you are doing this in spite of the EU manufacturer and relying on a third party that could cut you off any time it wishes to do so. If you have your doubt about that, ask yourself what you be your reaction if you swapped USA for China/Russia.

  11. Denmark bought 27 of those. They forgot to tell the public that 6 of them will be permanently stationed in USA for training purposes.

Noise level was manipulated to be lower than actual, so residents near fly zones had to be compensated.

Saab pulled out of the bdding because they said the process was unfairly favouring F-35.

Cost of F-35 was compared to the other bid from Boing, but they compared it to a version that is only used for aircraft carriers that has a lifespan of half of what they wanted to sell Denmark.

Lots of stories came out in the press. All the mistakes just happened to favour the F-35. The bidding process looked fixed. Most likely it was a political decision to get F-35.

Anyone curious can skim through the articles on the engineering news website ing.dk. They have 100+ articles before and after, and updates experiences since delivery.

  12. I hope more european Nations buy within the Continent.
After all, the US spend years yelling about europe “pulling its weight”.So I suggest we do that.

While using few US made Weapons.

  13. “Is reported”? Like they report it themselves?

In other “news” Finland is reported(by me) to buy flying reindeers.
