Lack of student accommodation causing extreme worry

  1. If universities had built more accommodation as they were increasing their student numbers over the years this wouldn’t he as much of a problem.

Example, NUIG built no on campus accommodation for almost 30 years while greatly increasing student numbers.

When they did eventually build some they priced it so as only the very rich and foreign students can afford it.

  2. A very simple solution is to record lectures/tutorials so students only have to go up on important days (exams,presentations,etc,..)

Obviously this won’t suit everyone , but it should at least put a bit of a dent in the crisis

  3. Dundalk just started building more student accomodations next to DKIT, but they’ve been needing more for years now. I genuinely wonder how much pressure that would alleviate. I had a handful of friends who moved back home because accomodation was hard to get, changing a 2 min walk to an hour long drive each day.

  4. The campus accomodations in Maynooth University are currently being used to house Ukrainian refugees. Now I believe that we have a civic duty to help those who are fleeing this conflict but at the same time in a town where student accomodations were incredibly hard to find it’s really highlighting how badly we’re lacking in places for students to stay. Not even campus is available to them now.

The local Facebook group is full of posts of people looking for housing but there’s just nowhere to put them.

It’s a really shit time to be a student.

  5. I’m lucky I only live 40 mins from my uni but I have friends who get up at 4&5 am to make lectures for 9am, it’s ridiculous there’s nowhere for students to live. And if there are any places it’s ridiculously expensive.
