~~Bit ambitious given the living wage is at €12.90~~
Edit: misread title, move along.
3 days worth of meals for one person if you shop very carefully.
“Enjoy a pack of fags on The Green Party”
Fine Gael are pushing back against the 23 euro raise that would actually be required, 15 seems to be the compromise figure
Raise wages? No, then we’ll have less jobs
Raise benefits? No, then we’ll have less workers
Lower rents? No, then we’ll have less rentals
I am all for increasing social welfare but as a society we should get something in return.
There is plenty of work that can be done in the community by people on long-term social welfare in return for the weekly payment. Not only does this get people back into the working routine, it also builds skills, confidence and self-esteem. There should also be other training options available.
Naturally, this would only apply after a period (let say 1 year) and would not apply to people on disability, carers allowance, pension etc.
If that happens I’m giving up work. What’s the point.
So they’re raising it to deal with inflation and even make the comment within the article it will dissuade some people from seeking work as they’ll make the same or even more on the dole. What the fuck is the point anymore? They’d rather focus on an easy issue like raising pension by a fiver or raising social welfare so they can guarantee the easy votes. Pack of cunts the lot of them
I thought the Greens didn’t care about the poor?
Just a reminder to the anti-dole lot that social welfare also includes disability and state pension. Or do you want your granny to go without heating this winter?
Sure of course they should adjust it over time, does that even cover the difference inflation made in the last year or two?
Social welfare rates are generally extremely slow to go up and I’m not just talking about the dole here. Inflation is skyrocketing and people are rapidly becoming poorer and poorer.
The dole, for example, has only gone up by €15 per week in the past five years. I’d argue you’re worse off now than in many years so they absolutely need some help.
Trying to be popular
We are at almost zero unemployment. Any measures should be aimed at getting people to work, not the reverse.
Teach a man to fish….
There are legitimate people on the dole struggling. €15 can make or break someone’s week but others are still going to complain.
We currently have extremely low unemployment. We cannot punish everyone else on social welfare because the few who are left on the dole can’t or won’t work. The only people I know who are still on the dole are people who should be on disability, but were denied. Disability is too hard to get and depends too much on your doctors ability and willingness to advocate for you. If you parrot stuff about dole scroungers and welfare cheats then you are regurgitating nonsense from Fine Gael’s highly paid spin doctors.
A €15 increase is less money than what people on social welfare were getting in November, due to inflation. The increase should be at least 20.
Never ever been as many jobs available and they want to increase the Dole. Madness
Extra 5 cans a week or pack of smokes.
it shouldn’t be so piecemeal, payments in general should be tied to cost of living and inflation, not to the moods of governments who might add 10 euro here or 5 euro there. Dangling a few extra euro ahead of the poorest people in our society is scummy
Dole should be proportional to what you contributed before you ended up on the dole. Most counties have 60-70% of previous wage
