Work from home, rent rooms to students, house Ukrainian refugees but whatever you do, don’t enjoy your own home
Is Simon Harris pulling those accommodation figures out of his arse? If there’s more student accommodation available than ever before, why is there a situation where 100+ students are lined up to look at 1 room with no other options in sight?
It’s a handy bit of cash for ppl, 14k tax free. I’d hate to share my gaff with strangers though. Did enough of that in my 20’s.
Sorry no way, I bought a house specifically to live on my own after years of family and roommate bs. It’s a freaking miracle it even worked out, no way am I giving up this new found peace
I’d imagine the amount of older people with spare rooms is insane. But no one should have to rent out their own space is they don’t want to. We need more options available for older people to downsize and free up some cash for themselves.
Yeahhhhhhhhh…..No.
This country is just a fucking shambles and is about to collapse at the seams any day now when everyone is too tired and says to themselves I can’t be fucked with this any longer.
Everything’s been trending downwards for years now, life has got harder and harder with no end in sight, it can’t go on forever, something has to happen soon. For better or worse there’s going to be a moment where things go boom.
40k worth of equipment. 1 x 6 month old baby. A wife and a dog. After struggling for 7 years to buy a house in cork. Now that we have our own “home” the last thing I wanna do is share it with anyone. Not because of the lack of compassion but the burden of the housing crisis should not be put on people that just want to have peace and have a safe haven in their own 4 walls.
Another non solution. Paracetamol for a GSW to the head etc
College now is just for the upper middle class and above as normal people even if they can afford the fees and living expenses cant find or afford college housing. Thank F.G.
What an embarassment
This problem didn’t start in the past 2-3 years, it has been going on for for about 10 years. The 2008 crash was a long time ago. We haven’t been building enough housing units to keep up the projected population growth for a long time and those figures look to be wrong even based on the recent census. But each scheme and strategy the government came up was inadequate. While building more housing sounds like a simple concept, it’s execution is very difficult and there are lots of reasons not to rush into as well as politicians, officials, journalists, builders and architects who have opinions on it who are not all wrong and need to be consulted and worked with. Not to mention communities and residents. But fuck me, it feels like a lot of people who haven’t been experiencing the problems first hand are now starting to realise just how bad the situation is. I remember journalists writing at the start of lockdown about the difficulties of renting an apartment for his daughter who was coming home, even though he had money the apartments were gone before he could do anything . He seemed shocked, I knew people who had the same experience 8 years before that.
I think the student unions should try and organise something where they just flood green areas on university campuses with tents for a while to raise a publicity shitstorm.
There are two large green areas directly in front of the Quadrangle in NUIG, for example, that would be perfect for it. High profile public area, close to lecture halls, central enough location and access to shower facilities in the form of gym/engineering/life science buildings.
Yay, let’s make loads of money off our fellow tax payers, let the government ask us to solve the housing crisis they haven’t announced yet and earn up to 14k tax free.. T&cs to be announced in the next budget! Its disgusting to see taxpayers money paid to developers in rent, HAP, government grants etc. but sure it doesn’t make sense to build using taxpayers money and use taxpayers money to pay rent on these and put it back in our taxpayers pocket to develop more housing.. No, no, developers need this money to….be rich
Every problem in this country seems to be put back on the citizens by the government. Covid, housing, energy crisis.
What’s the point of the government at all?
All of this is going to come to a head and it’s going to be awfully ugly
I’ve thought about letting out a room, but what if I end up with a Carter Hayes?
*urged* 😂🤣😂 fuck off
honestly, as someone who’s doing their leaving next year the last thing i *want* to do is live in a room in somebody’s house. sharing with other people is fine but renting a room in a family home? fuck that. but i also can’t seem to afford any of the cities i want to go to so it seems i’ll be pushed to. live love laugh ireland.
Sure why woukd they build more houses and swamp the market with cheaper rental property didnt the leak say “sure thats a persons income your messing with” when asked if rent prices need to come down or some sort of ridiculous comment like it
I think I’ll run it by my 🐈..see what see thinks…cause if they don’t see eye to eye with her… sorry, housing disaster or not.. you gotta go
Tell us you’re desperate and all out of ideas without saying so in so many words.
A guy that didn’t even finish one year of college becomes the minister for higher education because he got cozy with students during the abortion referendum… we’ve set such a low fucking bar for idiots to get into power no wonder we have these issues
Thank you Airbnb…
Headline should be “Government urged to build houses”. While you’re at it, fill the city with high rise apartments. They’re needed also.
Government urged to build some fucking houses
Can someone please explain to me, in laymans terms, why we absolutely fucking refuse to build accomodation of any sort in this country?
