  1. Texas is only used as in “Don’t mess with Texas” to imply that someone/thing is tough. Funny enough, it was actually an anti-littering slogan from the ‘70’s that changed meaning.

There are personality types associated with areas / states, generally too. E.g., ‘east coast liberal’, redneck (southern folks), ton of others.

  2. No, it is not used that way in the US at all. I recently moved from Texas to Norway and found it rather odd to think of Texas that way. I’m not originally from Texas either, but Texas is really one of the better run states in the US. Good schools, good roads, reasonable cost of living. It was explained to me that this expression was a hold over from the movies portraying the “old west” as a land of lawless gunslingers. I think it would make a good name for a TexMex restaurant over here.

  3. It stems from when western movies were popular culture. Texas was the Wild West.
It has nothing to do with modern day Texas or US.

  4. Might have come up here a couple of times already….

  5. Am also Texan, and on behalf of all Texans both locally and globally, we solidly approve this Norwegian term.

  6. It was our first impression of Texas when movies arrived a hundred years ago. Hasn’t changed. Not one bit.
