UK post boxes here. What do you think? I kind of like them, and like that we didn’t rip them all out when we got the aul freedom. A splash of green and be grand

  1. I’m with ye on that one..although I got a bad doing from one when I ran into one looking back during a race with my friend after school..they have character.old stuff is the best!!

  2. Dublin is full of British images and architecture on the buildings. Any lions or unicorns are always British symbols. Most street names in Dublin are British. Its great that we have a mix of Republican names and the old british ones, it tells its own story how things changed.

  3. That one has been replaced by a VR. Some of them are protected structures depending on where they are or if they are unusual or maybe original. Often they are in the same spot or close by to their position on the OS maps.

  4. I read or heard an comment someone made these postboxes, always stayed with me but can never remember the exact wording. The early Irish governments were exactly like the green post boxes, that had the old British way of doing things but covered in green paint, why as it was too difficult and expensive to try replace everything.

  5. Yeah I think they’re cool, esp. cos they’re fairly rare.

The fact that there green neutralises the royalist symbolism I feel.

  6. I love them, they tell a story of our history and they are so well made they’re still in use 100+ years later. It’s the most Irish fuck you to just paint it green also. I do wish we had retained more aspects of the British influenced infrastructure like the tram lines instead of ripping them all up. Luas is grand and all but we still playing catch up on lost time in terms of our public transport infrastructure.

  7. Probably couldn’t rip them out if we tried. Russia could rain down on us with their entire nuclear arsenal, and these things would probably stay standing.

  8. Scratch them and they are still red! I love them. My favourite are the rare number with SE for saorstat eireann. Apparently they started doing it but realised it was too much effort so stopped pretty quickly. Washington St in Cork has one.

  9. The idea to paint them green was practical and smart financial choice

And honestly, I like it, they stand out as an artefact from the times before, they’re pretty iconic looking too to be honest
