The previous Merkel-led conservative government aimed for a coal exit by 2038.
In 2020 24% of electricity production in Germany was from coal (mostly brown coal/lignite). That’s down from 43% in 2010.
Well, maybe you should keep nuclear power plants and leave coal earlier.

If I am not wrong, the 2030 target is even more bold than what Die Linke was proposing (i.e. decarbonisation by 2035) — and they had a rather ambitious plan. It’s interesting that despite FDP’s presence, a more ambitious target was agreed.
Well, it’s welcome news in any case. I’m in favour of maximalist demands, because in reality you always have to compromise. It’s good to compromise as close to your desirable goal as possible.
EDIT: Possible misinterpretation on my part – I think Die Linke’s plan was for complete phasing-out of all fossil fuels, including natural gas. This coalition proposal is only about coal.
It’s already too late
This is extremely ambitious, given that energy generated from lignite, hard coal and nuclear reactors still made up for 37.9% of total power production in the first half of 2021.
No, they don’t!
They agree to TRY to do it as early as 2030!
„Idealerweise gelingt das schon bis 2030“ -> „best case this will be achievable until 2030“
Swedish Vattenfall: oho
fucking 88 billion krons for nothing.
How?! You want to fund 2 more nuclears in Czechia and then buy it across the border? Fine by me… but you switched off nuclear, now you want to phase out coal and gas is getting more and more expensive… Seriously, what is the plan? Dont tell me they seriously think they can cover something the size and weather of Germany with solars and wind. That is just not gonna work. Same with hydro, there are great dams some places, horrible in other places.
It is a good goal to have but I only believe it once they have actually plans on how to archive it.
They already closed the coal plants that were old and easiest to replace. They already build solar & wind on the spots that are most efficient (and have the least local resistance).
It will get increasingly difficult to close & replace the ones that are left.
Edit: Man so tired of these comments. Can’t anyone comment in good faith anymore?
Does “coal” in this case include brown coal?
What about nuclear power? Is it still a bad thing?
How Germany will power their country? With wind, water, and solar power only? Does fossil fuel still exist?
where are your nuclear plants Germany???? what have you done to them huh??? how are you gonna make power when the wind is not blowing and iits winter so theres no sun huh????
First you shutdown nuclear than coal and in the end you will have a baseload of gas o fairy powder for when the is not sunny or windy.
