“Wait people actually pay their own bills. I’ve never had to;people always paid them for me” ~Tory Minster responding after accepting another kind ~~bribe~~ *donation*
How lucky we are that there’s a 50% chance we’ll get a PM who doesn’t see anything wrong with this, ‘it’s just fair profit for private companies’.
Or there’s Rishi, who doesn’t exactly blow me away with integrity either and seems like he’d only be helping the old and really bread-line cases…
…to the shock of nobody at all, there’ll be a *lot* more bread-line cases if this carries on for long.
5k is a lot more than 2 month’s wages for me…
Love how the government can make us stay in our houses for years, print fuck loads of money and then self-sanction our energy supply to play global power games… And that’s totally allowed. But if I don’t pay tax for 1 month they’ll come after me. I feel like a fucking slave in this nation sometimes.
ThIs Is LaBoUrS FaULt
Ah yes, two months of the ‘average UK wage’, conveniently ignoring that wages across the UK vary substantially; there are some parts where that ‘two months wages’ is actually ‘four’, or possibly more. Don’t forget as well that this is all based on a predicted Janurary rate that has already increased by over £400 in the last two weeks.
There’s no foresight or planning for the future, it’s all putting out fires and pretending that they’re doing something – and then claiming ignorance and innocence when it turns out to be worse, despite the fact that ‘worse’ was where we all saw it trending towards.
Our government is fucking useless.
I don’t give a crap what minsters could do, might do or what they are thinking of doing. I just want to know what they *are* doing.
It feels like there’s no one doing anything here right now apart from taking a summer break to honest. I don’t think they even know *what* to do. What a shit show these politicians are.
The apathy to this amazes me. Energy companies are posting record profits and our government is rubbing its hands with glee in anticipation of making their mates (and by extension themselves) even richer over the winter.
Meanwhile, the average Joe will be expected to work 16% of their lives to just have lights, hot water, and something to cook their food with. 20% or 40% of their working life heads straight to the Government (ok country) as income tax. Then there’s a further 20% on VAT. Council Tax aka £2k a year to have your bins collected. Stamp duty. Capital gains. Fucking inheritance tax. National Insurance for an intentionally failing NHS. Christ, even tobacco tax. Road fund license (which does not fund roads btw). That’s before we talk about the scandalous cost of a university education (in England at least) and making interest from student loans.
Am I just getting old or is it all fucking too much? Why aren’t I meeting people as angry as I am about the simple fact that we are not free? We are servants to the system because the compensation for the value we produce for it is almost completely taken away from us – with force due to the consequences of i.e., not having any power to your home or being sent to jail for avoiding taxes etc.
“Ok comrade,” you might say. But I’m not a socialist at all. We should all pay our way and the cost of living will always rise. I just want fairness in a democracy, but it seem that ours has been hijacked by villains and they are seeing how far we can be pushed.
You might also say it’s Ukraine or global warming, but I have not been able to find anything that shows this as the direct cause of such massive energy cost increases. I would be dubious anyway as we have such a strong renewables sector which I imagine could/should negate some of the extra costs of international issues.
But seriously, please share if you know of any reputable sources that break down how these issues are having such a massive impact on the UK specifically. If this is the case, it would calm me down somewhat.
Anyway, my ranting is not meant to offend anyone, I just find the whole thing somewhat frustrating and don’t see a way to put things right now the process has started. Especially with the new ‘protest but don’t annoy anyone legislation’ which was put in place so this can all happen in the first place…
Whose two months? CEO, teacher or pensioner on basic state amount.. stupid analysis
But so long as the energy companies use some of those record breaking profits to make a hefty donation to the Conservative Party, nothing will be done.
Or a years income if you are a carer looking after your disabled child
A years wage on the dole etc
It will drive people back to the office to save on electricity and gas bills. There will be a lot of love for that in Tory circles.
So far I have been super lucky. I’m locked in at £0.143/kWh for most of the day and £0.05 for 4 hours overnight. I honestly can’t comprehend what my new bill will be like.
Also why the fuck does the standing charge increase? The cost of delivering the electric hasn’t changed, surely only the unit price should be the one to go up.
The lowest amount on UC works out at roughly just over 4k for the whole year, obviously they won’t use as much as a family but there’s going to be thousands of people going cold this winter :/ this country is a fucking shambles
I remember something about nationalising the energy sector… I would love some of that right now
is that it? Sheesh. People need to cut down on their Netflix subscriptions and they’ll be able to afford this no problems.
Just had a quote for Octopus and my bill is going up to £670 per month shortly. That’s over £8k per year for electricity and gas in a 4 bed house with 2 adults and 2 kids.
Nothing particularly fancy, no hot tubs, etc. EPC rating of C.
This is gonna cripple so many families.
Bank of England going to put up rates 10% to try and control inflation while ignoring whats causing it.
It’s getting to the stage where they’re just pumping out meaningless numbers, people won’t pay it – not so much through protest they just don’t have the money.
It’s all getting a bit Dr Evil now…every day its a new massive number….’One Billion Dollars’
24/7 gym will be where I shower and keep warm in the evenings. Torrent everything for entertainment at home.
Mine will be 3 months.
I’ll be working from January to the end of March to pay for just my energy.
So what’s the plan when working people’s money all goes on tax, rent, utilities and the last penny on food? Majority of the country won’t save anything and pension contributions will probably stop. Have the oligarchs realised they fucked it and are bleeding us dry before a massive collapse?
£5000 is 4 months’ wages for me!
What’s that. 16.7% of annual income? Isn’t 10% the benchmark for fuel poverty? They used to bang this fuel poverty drum a lot about a year ago. I’ve not heard a peep on it since. Even mid-high earners will be in what is defined as fuel poverty now.
Yeaaa if your on min wage thats about 1/3rd your yearly pay
Don’t worry though, it’s good for businesses that made billions of dollars of profit. Looking at France, surely we should have the same approach and restrict the amount these companies can take the piss.
…. probably over 5 x minimum wage
Sweet. Means I’m not paying it 🙂 meaning I’ll save what I’m already spending on it because they aren’t the kind of companies to let you pay in instalments and I’ll never have enough to pay it all off at once every month.
If it comes between my rent, food and energy, fuck the energy companies, I’m putting a roof over my head and keeping my stomach full before their greed.
Besides. What’s the worst they will do? Put me and half the country under the threat of the bailiffs? I have good credit at the moment but it doesn’t matter in the end because in this economy I’m NEVER going to own a house or anything. So who cares if I end up being in debt? It’s not gonna change anything for my statue of living anymore 🙁
Alternatively, two months of wages is only expected to cover your energy bills.
