  1. For context, I recorded this at Festa Santa Marija, but I recognised ‘vaffanculo’ so thought that it might not be a religious chant. The people seemed very passionate, so I’d love to understand more

  2. Vaffanculo tal-Istilla .. means fuck off to the other band club who have the San Gorg feast .. these have the Santa Maria feast and are called tal-Iljun .. huge rivalry between them in Gozo.

  3. Won’t repeat much of the above. Basically in Malta many feast fanatics overglorify their patron saint while ridiculing the other. You would rarely find them in the religious functions though. I’ve heard worse to be fair.

    Victoria has two feasts, one for St George and one for St Mary. The bands of the two are called Tal-Istilla and Tal-Iljun respectively and during their marches they slander each other. This is the classic chant used by both.
