The estimated number of Arctic fox in Finland is between 10 and 20. Sweden and Norway have stronger populations, but still the total population between these three countries is estimated at just 450 adults.
In decades gone by, they were hunted for their fur, and hunting pressure took the population to a death spiral in Finland. Despite being protected since 1940, the population has been extremely weak. Current methods of helping the population include feeding apparatus that are suitable for the Arctic fox, but too small for Red fox to use – the Arctic foxes only strengths over the Red fox are its ability to survive in colder weather and meager food. Red foxes are completely dominant in areas they can survive, and Red fox hunting is another way to protect the Arctic fox.
The images in the article are of low quality, as the researchers didn’t want to disturb the animals – they’re taken at a distance of 300 meters.
