Can someone explain what rule to apply when turning right as a bicycle?

  1. This situation should not exits. The yellow bike arrow and the traffic light for bikes are incompatible with each other. I would say you must obey the traffic signal when it is red. If it is not illuminated at all than the yellow arrow comes in force.

    I suggest to get in contact with the commune and the cantons road traffic department.

  2. As others said it’s confusing with the extra lights below. The yellow bike with the arrow does overrule the regular red light though and you can go over red whilst paying attention to anyone else, like pedestrians, who might be allowed first.

  3. As long as the small bicycle traffic light is red, you’re **not** allowed to “turn right on red”. It doesn’t matter that they placed SSV 5.18 (Rechtsabbiegen gestattet) on the top traffic light, because on bike, the bicycle traffic light supersedes the general one.

    They have two options to fix that: removing SSV 5.18 and changing the bicycle traffic light to blinking yellow, instead of red (same meaning), or removing the bike traffic light to the right, leaving only SSV 5.18 on the general light.

  4. I’ve never seen the yellow bike before so I’d just go when the bicycle light on the right turns green.

  5. after everything I have read here and in the SSV:

    If both are red, you may not turn.

    If both are green, you are allowed to turn.

    If the bike signal is green and the car signal is red, you are still allowed to turn.

    If the car signal is green and the bike signal is red, you are not allowed to turn.

    The yellow arrow would only apply if the car signal is red and the bike signal is off.

    at least provided that the comment that states the bicycle signal has priority over the other signal is right. I could not find it worded that way in the SSV. It only states that signals with a bicycle symbol apply to bicyclists, but not that they would override other signals. It doesn’t matter if they are only synchronized with the big ones.

    I guess someone wasn’t really thinking.

    I still think, even though I don’t know the location, that the bike signals are just there to make them easier to see. In that case, the yellow arrow would have to be moved to the bike signal and/or a bike signal would have to be removed so that either the car signal applies to bikes turning right or the bike signals are replaced with a signal that doesn’t indicate direction.

    Edit: Upon closer inspection of the image, it looks like this is one of those intersections where bikes can stop in front of cars, so the bike signals have to be just to make them more visible, otherwise you could be blocking traffic.

  6. Light-signs always overrule .. auhm .. how would I call them .. „non-light signs“. Some might be placed last minute because of a construction site or an accident – Always follow the light 🙂

  7. Seems like an oversight to me. They added those yellow right turn bike signs, so bikes can ignore lights on right turns, that have bike lanes. The only traffic that interfer with turning right, are pedestrians or other bikers. Why they would add a light for bikes for the turn right, makes no sense.

    And, to answer your question, you can turn right even if the light is red, as long as you don’t endanger yourself and there’s no traffic coming (like a “yield”, if the translation is corect)

  9. Strictly forbidden. You may however get off your bicycle, walk it around the corner, and go on from there.

  10. The small lights are not especially for bikes. Those which are have a little bike symbol next to it. These are just out of convenience because you probably can’t see the ones up top without breaking your neck.

    So, you are always allowed to turn right with your bike, no matter what the lights say.

  11. It looks like they made a mistake here. With the top one they meant for cars (and other vehicles) to look out for bicycles, maybe (?). The one you should really follow is the one at the bottom right.

  12. There is no regulation stating the sign 5.18 (yellow bike sign) applies to exactly that one red light bulb it is mounted to. Just that it has to be mounted on a red light. Traffic signalisation at a crossing generally apply to the lane/direction so no matter where the signs are mounted they apply to all traffic on that lane (if not shown otherwise e.g. by arrows). The sign has an arrow so it means it is meant for everyone turning right and because of its definition this leads to allowing bikes to turn right even if the bike light shows red – you just gotta remember that you have to yield to everyone. If the bike light is green you can turn right with priority.

    But because swiss regulations say if there are seperate bike traffic lights a biker has to follow them and not the main lights it doesn’t make sense for this sign to be mounted at the car light instead of at the bike light. Even tough both places to mount the sign do have the same meaning.

    There are rules on how big/small the sign has to be, according to the size of the diametre of the red light it is mounted to. And since logically it doesn’t make much sense to have those signs mounted onto bike traffic lights (small diametre) they maybe only had this sign in the bigger size and thus had to mount it on the main red light. But that’s just a guess.

    That kind of shit has its place in r/youhadonejob. You can write to your canton to ask wtf they are doing, or ask provelo about what to do.
