I’m new to this country. Can someone please tell me what this is? is in my apartment next to the entrance door, but doesn’t do anything special when I push it.

  1. We have an identical one in our apartment. It turns on the light in the stairwell/by the elevator .

In fact, it looks so much like ours that, combined with your comment about installing lamps, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if you’re our new neighbour.

  2. It’s an indicator. If it’s dark you can find that lamp and it is next to the button that turns on the light.

  3. I have a similar one. Mine lights up on the power is on. It is useful since the contact is connected to a light outside, while the switch itself is indoors.

  4. As others have mentioned it’s to switch on the light, with the red light to help you find it.

There has been a development toward automatic lights. And sometimes the switches say, because it’s cheaper than removing them.

    So it might do nothing.

  5. Depends on how you wore it, it can also be wired as only on when the light is on, ie. used as an indication to remember to turn off the lights in the basement

  6. It’s a ‘glimlampe’ so that you can identify where to turn in the light in a dark stairway or hallway. It can also be wired to indicate if light is on or off – this would be used on toilets as a courtesy thing.
