Premier De Croo warns “next 5 to 10 winters will be difficult”

  1. Well.. shouldn’t have privatised the energy market then. Then again, it is not like de lijn, nmbs are doing so great, only Proximus because of the high prices

  3. the only thing we could do was starting 20 years ago transitioning away from fossil fuels.

But a transition was always too expensive, and now we pay the delay of this transition, with a lot of intrest.

If the government intervenes, they just let taxpayer money (our money) go to energy company’s and we still would have the same problems. I only want to see my energy bill go down by the means of an energy transition, not subsidies.

my current energy situation is currently still manageable (I’m pretty lucky). I pay 15€/month on electricity (eco power, solar panels, back turning counter) and 1700€/year for mazout ( In September I will have “spouwmuur isolatie” so hopefully this drops a bit. I’m thinking to install a Tado so I can regulate my heating more efficiently. I’ will do this winter an experiment if I can get by with setting my warm water to 50°C. If this is possible I could theoretically warm my house with a heat pump.

  4. And my generation ’85 and later can start getting used to the ‘nieuw normaal’ of paying insane amounts of money for the little energy we’ll be using. Let us clean up all of the mess my parents generation created. Let us wallow in misery and poverty because that generation only wanted more. The generation that was kept in ban of capitalism.

I hate this time to be alive. All the uncertainty, all the problems that don’t seemed to be solvable, or they’re just starting to try and solve.

  5. Very telling he does this between the soup and the potatoes on a VOKA event.

Warnings like that need to come through press conferences.

  6. First Macron who warns the French that it will be a difficult winter, but that people should be prepared.

If I remember Scholz also said something like that to his people.

    Now De Croo…

I like their honesty, but I hate where this is going. This feels like one of those things that in the end will be way worse than what we’re expecting. 5-10 years of difficult winters…

    Oh well, Winter Is Coming…

  7. There’s more to it then warming up your living room but a lot of people around me usually complain saying shit like ‘why should I not heat my house’ and stuff.

Imo we got way to much luxury. If we can’t even put on a sweater and move around a lil to warm up how will we ever survive a disaster event or a world war. Everyone will freeze to death since they have no clue how to warm up.

Putting the thermostat on more then 18 is a criminal act and anything you say won’t convince me. /s

  8. They want us to install solar pannels using the conjuncture as an incentive instead of actual help. And they’re preparing us for their decision to keep every nuclear power plant open.

  9. I’m a single parent of 1 kid. Currently renovating a pre war house with gas heating. I’m dreading the moment I live there…. I have committed to never let de heating go over 17/18 during the winter. Gonna be tough tho… luckily it’s a gesloten bebouwing so my neighbours may help with the heating.

    Edit: spelling

  10. The solution is quite simple, get Russia to open NS / 2 again. This is a German issue that’s causing fallout across Europe. De Croo is right that he can’t really do a lot about it but this comment is quite shit, obviously.

  11. I am wondering if it is really useful to let the population suffer for many years (because it will be many years)… just to make a political statement (economical sanctions) towards Putin.

a lot of people in many european countries have already financial problems due to the increase of energyprices. What will happen when the winter comes?

actually our monthly energy cost is about to be the same as the monthly rent… who can afford this?

why don’t they sit around the table with Putin and talk about an agreement? Nobody will ‘win’ this war but everybody is going to lose!

  12. What else does he have to say. Electricity and gas prices are not something you can influence greatly on the scale of a single country. We can’t go back to 2021 prices because of the global situation we’re in.

What i DO blame politics for is them sitting around, pushing issues forward because it will hurt them in the next election, all the while the possible issue becomes a huge risk we can no longer mitigate.

I swear to god people got too used to the decades of peace and profit we’ve had. If we think this is a huge problem, buckle up! We’re not even at war ourselves and we’re not being absolutely hammered by climate change effects like Africa is. It can easily get a lot worse.

  13. Great. I’ve been lowering my consumption. Bought an ebike to get to work and won’t be going to make my apartment too warm in the winter.

Still, it sucks. Alternatives aren’t feasible for a lot of people. I can’t use solar panels (apartment), so going full electric is out. As I’d just switch from one expensive form of energy to another.

We worden gepluimd langs alle kanten.

  14. Well, yes. That’s what people don’t seem to realise.

We are not seeing a temporary increase in prices that will eventually go all the way down again. We are seeing a spike that will go down eventually, but will remain at a higher level than what it was before.

We were not expecting the supply-shock to come so soon. But as it turns out, the system is fragile and everything that breaks causes other things to break.

Today, the only way we can produce enough energy without relying on fossil fuels, is nuclear. But building a nuclear power plant takes over a decade and uranium is not in easy supply either. Plus, nuclear power plants require things like water to cool down which is a problem in this drought, nobody wants to live next to them, and they aren’t exactly cheap to build.

We all want an easy solution, but there just isn’t one.

The result will be that we will have high prices for energy for the forseeable future. Yes, even if the war ends. Yes, even if we open the gas- and oilfields that were untouched because of environmental and other concerns.

This is not a Belgian issue. It’s everyone’s issue.

  15. Only winters? The cost of existing is skyrocketing, the other 3 seasons won’t be easier either.

  16. 1 or 2 problematic winters because of geopoletics I can understand.

But 5 – 10, maybe if you can’t solve it on that large time scale it’s time to make changes to your gouvernement or step down.

  17. Covid happends. Mandatory lockdown , inventories cannot be filled due to factories being sent home. Economy slows down huh crazy right. FED, ECB step in and print more money then all their ancestors combined. World reopens but got 10% +- more expensive. People hoared lots of money and start buying up supplies albeit with lower purchasing power. Inflation is rising though due to the excessive printing and high demand of goods. Suddenly ukrain – russia war breaks out. West imposes sanctions with huge effects on it’s western citizens due to not being prepared of the effects sanctions will have. They only focus on what it will do to Russia. Well as we’ve seen not much since they’ve expected and been dealing with this for decades now. Sanctions create even more inflationary pressures due to our sanctions giving our “enemy” lots and lots of leverage. Now Entirety of europe has to rebuild gaslines, relationships,… which will take at least a couple of years. Meanwhile the state russia is banking profits like nothing before, so is the corporate world due to prices rising but who is taken advantage of? Your average citizen which in the history of giving sanctions has been generally the dupe. Now they’re increasing interest rates due to high inflation but once these get too high they’ll lower them again and resort to QE since that’s all the options they have.

So when all is said and done europe and the US have done nothing to stop the war apart from sending weapons (wow) and crippling it’s citizens with prices we haven’t seen in 50 years. Thanks to the establishment for being so incredibly quick, decisive and thoughtful with the way they responded to covid and russia’s invasion.

  18. What did people expect after locking down the economy for 2 years and then trying to hurt the Russians?
Did anyone genuinely expect a different outcome?

  19. This winter I can help myself with my “weekend mood” fireplace running it daily, but if things go bad for so long, it wouldn’t be a solution neither when more people start to turn in the wood direction too.

My annual energy bill going from €2k to €4k was bearable, but €8k is way too far into nope zone.

  20. How about doing something about it. Engie is making millions off our back and then will make the govt pay more millions to extend the nuclear reactors. Fucking disgusting, nationalize those pigs.

100 euros help only is bullshit. Especially when rentals can’t even take advantage of it. Again poor people get fucked as usual.

  21. Does he even know what he says?!

I hope his heating system breaks down on a cold Saturday night and can’t find any mechanic for weeks
