  1. Absolutely disgusting that during the current crises the government is taking the stance on this it is. It’s normalising what would be illegal in the private sector.

Should be serious consequences to set an example on how proper conduct should be. We should expect more from our elected officials, not constantly excuse less

  2. Id say there are a lot of nervous TDs right now scrambling to declare properties and clean up their books..

  3. Senator Paul Daly could do with an investigation too. He was a westmeath county councillor for the first part of this Troy business and then was nominated as a Senator and Party Whip by none other than Robert Troy himself…

  4. Sounds like it’s soon going to be time for another tribunal which will take 10 years and fix nothing.

  5. Something extremely enraging about a public representative hoarding eleven properties during a housing crisis partly caused by their party. Hope the media puts their attention to some of the other landlord tds as well

  6. Megathreads don’t work for discussion, they’re popular for a day and then get ignored.

It’s a pretty popular topic at the moment, so why is mutiple threads a bad thing? I would argue new threads are more beneficial as more news comes out

  7. His cronies should be looked into. He’s either the shepherd or the sheep when it comes to something this dodgy

  8. I think this is it for this govt now. Troy will HAVE to resign, another bi-election will surely be lost by the govt parties but even if it isn’t, the govt majority is looking shaky at best! Cabinet reshuffle at Xmas will be full of independents if they won’t go to the polls. This is messy.

  9. I’m in no way an FF/FG supporter, but to try start off as a positive I do think the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment have done some good work these past few years. Troy himself has been behind work focused on Artificial Intelligence and Regional Development outside of Dublin, which for future prospects I feel is definitely progressive.

I think defending this guy a whole is always going to be a losing battle going forward though; the human in me *half* sympathises with him because look, we all do make mistakes, sometimes it’s not reading a document properly or something small like missing a fee which inevitably snowballs and snowballs. Getting stung for a mistake is rough going, and is something I think we can all relate to.

What I (and potentially people of my age in their late 20s/30s) *can’t* relate to, and I feel what’s going to infuriate most is how a man with a vested interest in _eleven_ properties is in such a position to improve Ireland’s enterprise and trade opportunities. If the goal is to earn enough and inevitably just hoard properties as investment prospects, then what precedent does that set for the generation you’re trying to encourage to attain employment and benefit the State?

I feel personally the dichotomy between Department and Troy is detrimental, and I hope it’s resolved without any ugly scenes.

  10. If he owns 11 properties by himself then how many properties are owned by members of the government. At that rate it’d be over 1000.

I know there’s no rules against this but in the middle of a housing crisis it just can’t be right.

  11. Megathreads are a great way to stop the discussion – I often go by these pinned threads without reading them. It is much better to allow people to upvote and downvote what they want to see and let the people decide so individual articles can get the viewers they deserve instead of trying to push all the conversation into one corner of the pub so it can’t get more attention.

  12. Strong argument that all politicians should put their own and their husband/wife’s assets in a blind trust for their entire term in office.

  13. Who’d have thought he’d turn out to be such a weirdo?

You know, his bizarre personal life.

Those weird things they say he does down at the aquarium. Why, I heard-

  14. TD’s mysteriously leaving politics in the next few months… people will suspect they’re hiding mountains of skeletons holding door keys..

  15. Can someone explain to me how Troy has 11 properties. There are people the same age as him on comparable incomes who can’t afford one. How did he manage it?

    Does he come from money?

Has he a second career we are unaware of?

Is his wife well off? Or does she have a good career?

    Early investor in crypto?

Did he win the euro millions?

Why are people not breaking down his door for financial advice. I have no clue how he has managed it. What are we missing?

  16. People that continue to vote FF how do you sleep with yourself at night knowing you’re fucking over your fellow countryman? I know you probably don’t give a shite

  17. Given that Cowen was sacked over the drink driving thing, has precedent not already been set by Martin?
