Fintan O’Toole: Robert Troy should quit or be sacked. Ireland’s fragile progress depends on it

  1. If this isn’t corruption, what is? Stop giving these people the escape route by saying ‘but this isn’t corruption’ – all you’re doing is continuing to enable them.

  2. Fintan insists that this is not corruption, not even a suggestion of it he says. How is he so sure about that? The fact that two county councils in Robert Troy’s constituency pay him more than the going rate for houses he sells to them, should merit investigation.

In one case he bought a house and sold it on to the council **3 months later** for **TWICE** the price he paid for it! That smells fishy to me.

  3. I don’t even get why FF still want him? He’s a complete liability makes FF look so dodge it’s like he was transported from 2002. Seeing various FF ministers come out and not only defend him but sing his praises really pissed me off this week

  4. Micheál Martin moved against and ousted Barry Cowen and Dara Calleary arguably for less than what Minister Troy has got up to. Odd that he’s satisfied that Minister Troy can stay.

It really undermines the efforts he has made as leader and Taoiseach to try and enforce some sort of higher standard than what was accepted in the past.

  5. Regarding ABP can directors be criminally prosecuted? Know that they can in the states. Can it happen? Has it ever happened?

  6. This all hinges on the belief that anyone in FF cares about corruption or conflicts of interest or rule breaking. They only care when they are not profiting from it, but in all other cases it’s explicitly what they vote for.

To the average FF voting scumbag, if a TD isn’t able to look after himself in his role, how is he able to look after you?

  7. > The most obvious one is that he is Minister of State for (among other things) company regulation. He’s the guy in charge of framing the regime under which companies comply with their legal obligations — including of course the obligation to report their dealings accurately.

    > That in itself makes his position untenable: the minister for gamekeeping can’t be a poacher.

Love Fintan 😆 Humour and consistently brilliant commentary

  8. Prime example of why democracy is a joke, guy has been caught and its really up to how useful he can be to the ruling power whether he loses his position.

No consideration given to whether what he did is wrong/corrupt

  9. What the poster doesn’t include is that Fintan highlights the 49 recommendations SIPO made in their annual report, only a handful have been moved on, mainly by the Electoral Reform bill.

Every other item has ‘none’ beside it. The most damming element right there, coming from the Standards In Public Office.

  10. Troy is more or less the same as most politicians sitting at the top table snout in the trough what is in it for me and don’t mind those fucking eejits who voted for me they won’t remember by the time the next election comes around. Well we will FF/FG and let’s not forget the anti rural party. The time was never better to have Sinn Fein in power.

  11. Why is the option, quit or be sacked?
Why not sacked, prosecuted, jail time, fines and government retrieval of assets incurred during period in government. (Inclusive of assets transfered to friends/family and private organisations)

This corruption needs to face serious consequence. Not just for Robert Troy, but those who use their positions to screw the people over during their time as elect government, hired to work in public interest.
Quit or sacked rule means other will take as mich as possible knowing nothing will happen apart from having an option to retire after taking advantage as much as possible.

  12. Fella lives five minutes down the road from me, often see him out for runs or driving his Tesla around the village he lives in, not hugely adored by the populace as it is so would be interested to see what they think of him now

  13. Love that this isn’t going away for them. Whether he faces consequences or not, the reputational harm to Fianna Fáil can’t be undone. Another addition to the government’s conga line of cock ups.

  14. Out of the country on holidays at the moment so haven’t been following this story but the old line “if you’re still explaining on Tuesday you’re in trouble” is very true.

  15. >Robert Troy should resign as Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise. If he does not do so voluntarily, Micheál Martin should sack him.

    >Otherwise, even the most minimal protections we as citizens have against potential conflicts of interest in public life will be revealed as farcical.

It already is farcical. How many stories regarding politicians’ conflicts of interest have we read in the last few years, ending with said politicians getting off scot-free?

  16. He has to go but you can be sure if the ethics committee did an audit of all declarations most tds would be shitting themselves

  17. That rte interview was awful. Why is he even a TD? Surely he makes enough money off his property empire

  18. A minister not respecting the law is already a reason to be sacked, but the fact that he was trying to promote his own interest is another reason for it to happen!
The prime minister forgiving him is another sign of corruption in this country! None of them respect the law but want us to be little muppet and suck it on! Those politicians need to learn a lesson and it will only come from the People

  19. Well the good news is the cunt “takes full responsibility” for something which by very definition was his own fucking responsibility.

  20. He seems to have sold a couple of house to the council that he was a councillor with, is that correct ?

Didnt hear much about this aspect.

If so sounds pretty dodge. What kind of price did he get for those gaffs?

  21. it hurts even for me to write this down here but if same thing happened in UK they would definitely be kicking him out
