  1. I’ll be honest, I’ve never given any thought as to what sort of person would write a 4000 word thesis about wanking over drawings of young boys, but if I had I don’t think I could have hit upon a better stereotype than that creepy looking degenerate weeaboo.

Also isn’t a crime to have even drawings of underaged children in sexual situations? Creepy fuck should be getting a visit from the local plod.

  2. Comics of young boys/ What does that mean…like Ben 10? I mean it doesn’t make him a Pedophile but he sure seems interested in being one. Also, who agreed to this. Are there not tutorials and hoops you need to jump through before submission of a paper. Everyone involved needs a roundhouse kick to the throat or a good talking to.

  3. can i have some research grant money? what’s the reasearch? wanking… to ltitle boys. here’s 20k a yr, fill ya boots!

‘just off to do some research mum’ some what? ‘SOME RESEARCH!’

  4. Masturbating to drawings doesn’t make some a pedophile. Sure, it’s weird he documented his own attraction but there’s a general idea in arts academia that we need to seek to better understand attraction to taboo subjects. These findings however need to be read and interpreted objectively. He knew what he was doing when he decided to become a participant in his own research.

  5. The paper was basically just a 3 month diary of the guy beating off to kids yet it was peer reviewed and published without a single raised eyebrow. His supervisor read several drafts and actively encouraged his “research” the whole time.

The guy previously owned several magazines that published photos of young boys.

He’s spent years openly discussing how sex with teenage boys is nothing to be ashamed of along with all sorts of other weird fetishistic discussion of “boyhood”.

He opened the paper by saying it was an investigation of the “community” masturbating to these comic as an outside observer but years prior to writing it was openly discussing masturbating to the same things.

Yet not a single red flag was spotted by anyone until Twitter started posting the paper.

WTF is going on with academia?

  6. Aside from the utter grimness of this, it does point to a wider issue within academia, particularly in the humanities… some utter shite gets funding as ‘research’ these days. It’s to the point the whole funded PhD set up needs a complete overhaul… tax payers’ money shouldn’t be spent like this.

  7. Seeing this article and reading about this in the comments I can see that it’s a Japanese culture thing, in manga and anime it’s quite common to come across what appears to be underage girls/boys and sister fetishes..

Remember in Japan it wasn’t that long ago people could still marry 14 year olds..

The storytelling of the anime and manga art form is amazing, and then sometimes for no reason at all the main character will be interested in an underage girl or his sister.. It is quite bizarre and something you have to kind of ignore sometimes in these shows..

You can Google: Shota (boys) and Loli (girls) and read about where it comes from and the context for what it means, make no doubt though it is a perversion to want to masturbate to those characters..

I think this is basically an extension of all that, I believe though it’s garnered more attention because it’s “magazines of young boys” and not the more socially acceptable but still weird “men ogling over young females of an undisclosed age” which isn’t something exclusive to Japan..

  8. Manchester uni used to be such a great place to study, it was on my short list 12 years ago when I was looking.

Now it seems to be full of nonse’s and terfs.

  9. Destigmatising pedophilia through academia with suport because it’s pretends to be, “anti Tory”. I’m honestly surprised The Guardian didn’t support him as a, “brave rights pioneer using academmia to bring shock attention to the injustice”.
    [https://www.csaprimaryprevention.org/supporting-maps.html](https://www.csaprimaryprevention.org/supporting-maps.html) <This is unfortunately real.

  10. This nonce, openly admitted and detailed himself wanking over little boys for months on end. How is he not ashamed on himself and how could he ever look anyone in the eye? Like at the best it’s damagingly embarrassing and at it’s worst its an openly admitted a criminal act with his fetish which is now on display to the world. Fuck me

  11. Pretty good reason for Sunak’s plan to trash degrees that don’t have any earning potential. Worse still, the taxpayer funded this pedo.

I’m sure there are a bunch of bleeding hearts on here that think his work is seminal (pun intended) tho…

  12. It calls into question the entire academic process and the internal culture of humanities departments.

For this to be published it requires so many ethical and quality processes to have abjectly failed that it boggles the mind.

The part of that that article that needs reading is about how this had to be a systemic failure. Far too many people had to be involved and all of them waved it through.

We will get the usual excuses trotted out but sadly the humanities have willingly and over a long period put themselves in this position and they made it worse by their knee-jerk defences (largely now deleted). Humanities departments are so proud of their critical thinking – its long past time they turned that onto themselves for a while.

  13. This story is more complex than ‘the student’s a pedo’ people are shouting.

Qualitative Research is an excellent quality journal, especially for a PhD student to publish in. As a minimum, he the student’s two supervisors will have known of the study, probably co-authored it, the journal editor would have seen merit in the paper, two expert reviewers will have seen merit in the paper and provided (multiple) rounds of revision requirements.

Maybe he is a pedo, maybe he isn’t. I don’t know. But there are many people in this story.
