Dya reckon id manage to get away going for a jog on it this evening? All the access points near me a very badly fenced !
The Michael Ring road
Looks cute might cruise in the right lane later.
Ah, Croagh Patrick looking mighty well there in the background.
I’m sick of these bullshit posts.
There’s no grass in the middle of that road, its clearly not Mayo,
Hang on, have they delayed it again? It was supposed to be finished in September.
By way of the bridge, do you reckon the lanes
to the left might have a lower height limit compared to the lanes on the right ?
I love how they built the tie-in roundabout a year earlier than necessary so everyone has to loop around it for months for absoilutely no reason.
I live right by it and the noise was a nightmare over covid.
7am loud drilling and rock blasting every couple days akin to mini earthquakes for 2 years straight.
Have heard that the company involved caused serious damage to houses around the turlough area and were taken to court.
I have mixed feelings on the project overall.
Its great for Westport but not so great for the other surrounding areas, towns, businesses and establishments that will get bypassed.
Guessing no sign of any upgrades to the rail line?
Dual carriageway is such a quaint term!
Jesus the annual tractor run will be only savage their next year…
I’ll do the sculptures for it.
absolutely not needed, this is another example of cronyism and parish politics in Ireland. The road study showed that it was not needed, there is a 10 minute train journey from castlebar to westport that could have had services improved instead. This dual carriageway doesn’t even join up to another 4 lane road, it’s just plonked in the middle of nowhere and bypassing the main county town Castlebar.
It feels like we are being bound to repeat the urban sprawl we have in the GDA so all these landowners will profit from throwing us all into our matchbox rental homes.
This road is the cause of some controversy (noise from construction for months on end being one)
But my main gripe is how much traffic will it alleviate in Westport really?
This road bypasses westport for Newport. Firstly, there’s already a road from Castlebar to Newport. A lot of locals from the Castlebar side of Westport use the Slogher road to avoid the town anyway, and even *if* they do go through town they take the first right, and don’t go through the town proper and cause congestion.
Anyone who’s lived or worked in Westport is aware of how desperate the traffic can be over summer especially, and I don’t see how this is a solution at all. I’m not exactly sure how much traffic heading through westport is destined for Newport or Ballycroy, I’d wager not much having lived and experienced the traffic there all my life.
TLDR: if you’re going to Newport from Castlebar then you don’t really need to drive through Westport, or at least not through Bridge St, Shop St or James St. I’m not sure how much of a real difference this road will make to traffic conditions.
Great investment, more roads for more cars!
We live right by the westport part of construction and it has not been fun, hope they hurry up! It’s causing massive delays on the current westport to castlebar road at the moment too. Let’s hope the end result is worth it.
_They say the best road in Mayo is the one out of it but ..you have to cross that road to get back in_
Why do y’all use so many ultra British terms like carriageway? Looks like a “divided highway” to me… something for automobiles, not carriages.
Someone fixed the road!
Absolutely ridiculous. Why didn’t spent the money on improving the train and bus service?

That crooked bridge is not aesthetically pleasing
