Extinction Rebellion protests have cost police £60million since 2019

  1. Meanwhile climate change has cost the Earth billions of pounds, mostly affecting the poorest and most vulnerable.

I think they are protesting for a good cause. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but if nothing (or very little) is getting done about something, what else can you do than petition and protest to those that can do something about it.

  2. Meanwhile the fossil fuel industry gets tax breaks and subsidy amounting to billions each year on their incredibly lucrative product while causing immense environmental damage… but the people protesting that are the real problem.

  3. I’m very skeptical of this number. They don’t explain how they actually calculated it, so presumably it includes things like the salary of the officers present…but those officers would be paid anyway, so it’s not like banning these protests would actually save all that much.

  4. good, amp it up, shut this floating turd country down and make people notice there’s a fucking emergency happening

  5. £60million is kinda chump change for Tories though.

I mean it would pay for some hospital staff for a couple of years but in terms of Tory embezzlement it’s several billion short of something worthy of discussion, no?

  6. So we’re instead of putting a price tag on climate change we’re putting a price tag on the activists bring awareness to it

  7. There’s plenty of stuff you could criticise about XR, but them achieving their aims of causing inconvenience is hardly it.

Without a frame of reference for how much other protests cost, this doesn’t mean much, regardless of what you think of XR.

  8. “But while more than 200 protesters were arrested, just 20 have been charged with an offence so far, police said.”

Tells you all you need to know about Patel and the Met deliberately over-policing just so they can use the “taxpayer expense” angle as a way to whip up public anger.

  9. That’s fuck all, I don’t give a shit.

How has it cost the police anything anyway? Are they a business now? Did they use copius amounts of CS spray on protesters or some shit?

So £60 million to arrest 200 protesters and only 20 people have been charged? Sounds like this article is describing police incompetence and waste of money.

  10. Shell Oil cost the treasury £100 million because they were subsidised and paid no taxes.

I’d rather have Extinction Rebellion than Shell Oil.

  11. How much have train cancellations, water shortages, fires and crop failures caused by climate change driven drought and heat this summer cost the economy so far?

The cost of hippies sitting in the road is small change compared to the cost of what they’re warning about. And that has always been their justification for what they did and do.

  12. There were some XR folk building a bamboo structure in the car park of the complex my sister lives in. When the met got wind of it they sent 50ish officers to occupy the car park and a fucking helicopter to hover overhead for 4 hours, not letting anybody in or out. So if you’re wondering why the cost is so high or why they won’t investigate most crimes its because their main priority is policing bamboo related crime.

  13. Good! Here’s to the next £60m.

If our government did its f’ing job they wouldn’t have to protest about climate action ffs.

  14. Maybe the police should stop upholding the governments decision to do fuck all else about climate change? Maybe they shouldn’t waste their time policing objectively necessary protests as well.

  15. And conservative cutto the police force has cost the british people billions. Just fuck off with the properganda. Do your job and start taking this shit shower of a government to task.

  16. meanwhile government inaction on climate change set to cost the uk 10s/100s/1000s billions of pounds.

I think I know who we should be angry with.

  17. This brings to the forefront of what I have been saying for 17 years when it finally clicked when watching films.

You always hear “Oh we can’t do that, it costs too much” when the human race is on the edge of extinction…..WHO CARES ABOUT COST? Cost should not come into preventing our extinction, it should a blank check thing, just fucking do it and share resources to do it, fuck politics.

Adding a cost to these protests is a way to get people pissed off at the protests for “wasting money which could be spent dealing with rapes and child abuse cases”.

  18. Isn’t this some sort of “Wokery” that our fascist attorney-general Suella Braverman should be legislating against? This should be right up her street.

  19. Then listen to us and make changes reasonable changes and maybe the protests will stop. I mean they aren’t asking for anything other then common sense steps to safe guard a future.
They put double the effort into attacking protest and unions why not listen to them?

  20. All that time and effort to…. make the general public more hostile to people working against climate change. Brilliant.

  21. And the same lefties demanding more money for public services will support this without a hint of irony.
