I can’t imagine what the parents have been going through.

  1. Eh she got way more jail time for helping rape/murder than rapists who get convicted nowadays do. Seems like the court nowadays goes “das wel ni zo lief eh, verkrachten, dat mag je niet meer doen. Allez ga maar naar uw bedje en denkt er eens goed over na.”

  2. Obviously this is hard for the parents, but four years from now it would probably be equally hard (sentence was 30 years). It is a very tricky subject, but personally I like the general ideas behind Lejeune, since it creates strong levers for a successful re-integration.

Unfortunately it’s very simple. Wet Lejeune. She “did her time” so she can now get out. It must be absolutely gut-wrenching for the parents and other victims so maybe it’s high time to actually review the current laws?

  4. I guess she isn’t going to do that shit alone.

That’s why dutroux and other sex offenders/murderers should never get out. If 1 in 3 rapes again. No rapist should get out.

A bit of empathy is nice, but why do people always insist that victims of a crime MUST carry along a life-long trauma? This is such a Belgian thing, all this moaning and groaning and eternal long faces. I went to a funeral recently and a seven year old child was reciting some text about “dear Grandpa we will miss you forever the pain will never really go away”.. gimme a break already.

Maybe one or more of these parents have found peace now. Maybe they don’t care about Michelle Martin being in jail forever? Who knows. It’s not our part to always assume the worst.

  6. Friendly reminder what the point of sentencing is in our justice system: reform the criminal and make sure they are rehabilitated and able to rejoin society without being a threat to society.

Thats it. Thats the only point. The punishment is not for the victim, which is why the victim doesn’t get to argue about sentencing in a trial either, only about guilty or not guilty (which doesn’t stop many victims and lawyers from doing so in the media).

So the only question relevant here is ‘does Martin pose a threat to society and will she commit new crimes, or is she reformed and rehabilitated’.

Apparently, the justice system thinks she’s been reformed which means there is no reason to keep the sentencing.

  7. Straf gehad, straf wettelijk uitgezeten.

  9. People talk mostly about how she let those poor children starve (which is absolutely horrible) but let’s not forget that years prior she was already in jail because when her husband was raping girls, she was filming the rape for her husband.

She’s as awfull as he is.

  10. Some people should never be released back into society. Now all that’s left is let dutroux free, cause “he served his time”.

  11. To put things a bit in perspective, Anders Behring Breivik who killed 78 people in Norway will serve 21 years in prison.
