Meanwhile Fish & Chip chain “Mother Hubbards” is opening new branches across the country.
This is just another transfer of wealth from small businesses to corporate chains 😤
A brand new chippy has just opened at the end of the street I live in (its a village too so no other fast food places). Unfortunately I don’t eat meat or fish and I hate potatoes and I’m not going in there for a pot of peas. It is cheap though- £6.50 for fish and chips, £1.30 for battered sausage, cheese burger and chips £4. It seems popular right now and while I won’t be going in there I hope it survives.
cant we all chip in?
Pubs too apparently
There are 2 chippies in my town and one is doing OK while the other is struggling. The struggling one started up a few years back, its really modern, shiny bright clean interior, sells a load of other gear not just fish and chips, very expensive, tastes clean but not particularly tasty. The other seems to be doing ok, its an old fashioned place thats basically just the front room of a brick terraced house with a small serving hatch, a poster of fish on the wall and a basic fryer, up until a few years ago it just sold cod, haddock and chips, gherkins and pickled onions. A year or so ago it started doing sausages. I was thinking that some of these no-frills places will probably do OK, seems there are some places where theres a lot of capital, loans and investments at stake which would be manageable but for the recent price jumps and such.
£4 for large chips is ridiculous
Never mind the chippies- the weed bill will be through the roof! Grow rooms are already leccy intensive, assuming they’re not rigging the meters I suppose.
Anyway, I’m sure rigging meters, which I do not condone,* will be a thread for another day.
*I really don’t condone it, I’m not being facetious: I don’t approve of burning down your neighbours house. But it is inevitably going to be a growth industry.
Praise be to Tory Britain.
Well this thread has cheered me up
Get your hanging rope now, before inflation shoots the price up
Poachers? Of fish & Chip shops, who would believe it 🙂
My local the chips are still reasonable but goddamn the fish is like £8 – 9 a piece. Fish and chips was traditionally the cheap option. You used to always be able to get a whole meal for the same price.
I went to my local chippy the other week and they wanted over £17 for fish chips and peas. I left with nothing.
I don’t get why no one else is seeing this is exactly what the far right Tories and Brexit dick heads wanted? Look at all this market share that can be bought up on the cheap. It was always about creating market conditions that would shock every SME into foreclosure.
Take pubs for example. There was really only the small locals that were competing with Chief Nonce Tim Martin. Small locals that wouldn’t and haven’t been able to ride the shockwave of Brexit. They’ve been rubbing their grubby little hands since 2016.
I went to a new to me chippy the other week, small fish, small peas, large chips and a Donner kebab.. £18 I nearly fell over.
Anything else you wanna take away? How about my kidney? Or my liver? At this point it feels like we are all just slowly being pushed over a cliff edge. What is the point anymore? I honestly don’t think I’ll be far off becoming homeless whilst still working full time at this rate, can’t somebody just kill us all now and save us the cold winter?
Now this is a war on British culture fuck the tories they’ve gone to damn far this time
Dunno if your local chippies are like mine, but around here they are stuck further in the past than Royal Mail.
Every single other takeaway – we’re open 7 days a week, from midday until 2am. (I realise this is not a healthy work culture).
Local Chippy – We’re open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10.30 am to midday. Thursdays 11am to 11.30 am. Fridays we open 2.30pm until 3 and 4.30pm til 5. Weekends 2pm to 4pm. Why are we struggling for customers??
When it’s £7.50 for fish and chips then yes, they are doomed. Last time I went, they ARE doomed.
£7.50 is a joke. You can Wetherspoons it out with a drink for £6.
A lot of these chippies are charging a tenner for fish and chips, what do you expect? Come to most Asian areas in the Midlands/up north and it’s far cheaper. I personally wouldn’t be eating out anywhere near as much if it was that pricey.
Shame coz you get way more for the money than maccys KFC or burger king
It’s actually insane when you think about it.
Too expensive for chippies to exist when they really shouldn’t be all that expensive to run.
I don’t understand this country anymore. It wouldn’t be half as bad for them if rent and business rates weren’t so insane.

Shame, but holy crap the prices exploded, my local has lovely fish and chips but the cost Is massive.
I hope if inflation, cost of energy and Oil comes down, thr price could drop, but I honestly doubt it.
Not paying him nearly £3 for a sausage in batter
It’s going to be a wild ride when the customers of these chippies have no money to spend on food because of their gas bills.
Same applies to the many industries.
Speaking of facing extinction…maybe this will give Cod and some seabirds a slight boost? Idk
Going to be a very sh*t year for an awful lot of people. It’s really sad
*Edit: Downvotes. I guess some people only care about endangered wild animals being killed when foreigners do it. Or just don’t care about it at all.*
What delicious irony! /s
Don’t Let the Salads Win, Eat Chips.
Obesity crisis solved
On the bright side this will make our fish even happier.
They are getting battered at the moment though
[Around 70% of pubs too](https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/aug/23/pubs-winter-energy-costs-soar)
