Opposition party wants NATO command centre in Finland

  1. Using aggressive NATO posturing as a political bargaining chip to rile up voters is dangerous territory. Increased NATO presence along the Russian border vastly increases the chance of nuclear war; you’d hope politicians across Europe would have some respect for that fact while they try to get their grubby hands on power

  2. Does it make sense to put a command centre in a (hypothetical) forward position like that? We have modern day communications, it makes more sense to put a command center in Sweden and monitor the whole Baltic region from there. But Sweden wouldn’t go for that, which I respect.

  3. This is just election strategy for the upcoming elections. We don’t need a command center and NATO definitely will not put one so close to the Russian border, but it will prolly entice some voters with a nato-boner

  4. A comment I once read in r/europe: “A soldier in a bunker deep beneath the Ural Mountains puts another pin in the map and goes back to reading his newspaper”.
