Into cars with a gym membership to shower like the students I guess.
I think both sides of the immigration fence can call our Ukraine response and absolute farce.
The Doras CEO says that the refugees deserve better. And that “we’re still a wealthy country and we must provide a basic standard of care and accommodation that doesn’t see people sleeping in hugely inadequate conditions.”
Of course he’s not wrong. But if we are such a wealthy country? Why are we not providing adequate housing for all our citizens? And why has this government allowed this to happen for so long? We ALL deserve better.
It seems though with emergency housing requirements, be it for refugees or for homeless people, we are not willing to build anything unless it’s absolutely perfect looking, and highly profitable.
The attitude seems to be either full blown NIMBYism or profiteering, while at the same time going on and on about how wonderfully charitable we are.
There’s no reason we couldn’t find some state land sites and whack up a ton of modular housing.
If it subsequently gets demolished in 20 years, it would still be vastly cheaper and more humane than what we do instead.
But this is Ireland. We will make it the most expensive modular housing in the world. Let some weird company run it really badly and spend 30 years going through planning objections based on snobbery and nimbyism…
At the end of the project it will cost 10 billion and provide 100 homes by 2077.
why doesnt the government CPO jury’s in ballsbridge?
in bed with developers?
All very well thought through I see
I work in a student accommodation-adjacent role and have been told that the Ukrainians who are leaving are being referred to the Simon Community.
Desperately sad.
Decades of neglect of the housing needs of the nation by the state has led to a catastrophe for the vulnerable in our society and now victims of war. It’s unconscionable. There’s no leadership,no political will to do anything but pour money down the drain.
I won’t ever vote for the likes of Sinn Féin but I understand those who will.
Who could’ve possibly seen that accepting 30k+ refugees with no clear plan into a country with a housing crisis would be problematic.
I can’t imagine this is what the Ukrainians were expecting either.
If only someone could have predicted that taking in tens of thousands of refugees in a country with 0 available housing will go badly. Completely unexpected and shocking
Send em to leo’s and micheals gaff.
Why is the Red Cross in charge of this? They run First Aid courses and have a history of financial scandals- what would they know about housing?
Well now we have 160+ TDs, all I’m sure with a few spare rooms. They advocated the “no cap” farce that has lead poor Refugees into this position and strained our country beyond measure, so lets let them step up to the plate?
Pikachu faces all around now🫤. What did they expect like…there was a housing crisis before and there is still a housing crisis now.
The Ukranians will be on the streets for about 20 years. Then the government will build a needle exchange.
Remember that FFG cynically brought all of these refugees into Ireland, knowing full well that large numbers of them would become homeless – they have been used as pawns to deliberately worsen the housing crisis, for private gain/profits.
That’s how cynical and fucked up the politicians are in this country.
What makes this even worse is that Poland has taken in over a million refugees and is still handling their housing crisis better, while we’re breaking at 50K, while also fucking over students. The fact that things have gotten this bad is ridiculous and embarrassing.
Irish redcross have my number since march, not a call , email nada, i couldnt give 2 fucks at this stage what they do.. incompetenct clowns like the rest of the country
I love how people here were all pro-refugee, but now that it’s affecting us, they don’t care. Well guess what. It’s going to get even worse and we’re just going to have to deal with it. We’re not providing any military support, so this is the least we can do.
Tents in Army bases, we couldn’t put them on the streets
Ohh the humanity of only anyone could have seen this this was going to happen
Anyone I know who signed up for housing refugees via Red Cross (ourselves included) has heard fuck all back for nearly 6 months. Just some Garda vetting and then nothing further.
Boot out fake refugees and fake political asylum seekers. That should free up thousands of places for real refugees.
This is embarrassing. It feels like Deja vu. I don’t know why.
